    Audi A1 Quattro

Driven: Audi A1 Quattro review and pictures | evo

" engineering terms it's a packaging miracle - the A1 was never intended to take this engine or a four-wheel drive system - with some fairly substantial modifications to the rear of the floorpan to mount the S3's four-link rear axle. The driveshaft to the rear diff runs through what used to be the spare wheel well and the petrol tank - Audi had to develop an all-new 'saddle' fuel tank to bridge it."

This would suggest that maybe the idea of an AWD Polo R maybe a bit wide of the mark

they're only going to do 333 a1 quattros.

i doubt they'd bother turning the polo into awd, regardless of what engine they put in it. as a well respected motoring journo once said regarding a certain vag car: "it doesnt need awd on the street, and it certainly didnt help it on the track".

Technically the platform was developed for awd all along, it's fundamentally the same as the mk4 golf and that ran 2 awd setups globally...

    interesting... mk4 r32 and bora 4mo?

i guess i contradict myself - i cant see why the polo would need awd, or even anything short of a golf wagon, and yet i'd love a 4wd tanto:

I beg (hope) to differ.. if there is substantial works needed to reengineer the rear, then i think there is room for the AWD Polo R.. as VAG try to reduce those development costs through increased production. I recall Bugatti sold Veyrons at a loss, but I doubt VW/Audi would try that.

I'm with buller Scott on this one. Why build the same car, sell it for $15k less and piss-off the Audi owners out there who bought a supposed limited edition, same reason why Volvo don't build the c30 pole star when the focus RS is out there, well, was...

I'd expect this would be further along the road. Probably a mid or end lifecycle refresh.

I doubt the Polo would get the same 5 cylinder engine as the RS3/A1 Quattro. But a 1.6T that's rumored to be in the works might be a good fit. Upsell Polo customers and not pissing off the A1 Quattro 2.5l LE customers.

Based on your reasoning we'd never have the Polo GTI which can be speced for about 35k to be an exact match for the A1 Sport which sells for 50k and up.

As for the PoleStar, I recall that was an outside partner house not Volvo itself. Plus Volvo was also busy being sold off to the Chinese so I expect any low volume limited appeal (to Volvo's target customers) would be put in the backburner.

Did you look at the price of tha A1 Quattro? 40K UKP. If they thought they could recoup the development costs then they wouldn't charge such a high price for the A1. In comparison a Golf R is 32K UKP. A BMW 535I is only 39K UKP.

Its really irrelevant talking UKP (GBP)... do I think the POLO R would ever reach the AU market, negative on that Ghost Rider! Same could be said for the RS3 etc.
