The reason for using a wind back tool or as I do a G cramp is to push the piston back evenly Unless you have a huge set of multi grips you would be pushing on one edge and can jam it and score the bore
You must have been lucky as I tried that 40 years ago and had to buy a new caliper , never did that again

Sorry i took so long to reply, yes, the rears DO need to be wound back in, no, a g clamp won't work. They also changed the damn hole pattern so make sure you have the appropriate hole pattern adapter...
