After a bunch of looking behind the glovebox and then searching online I found this
Volkswagen Workshop Manuals - Polo Mk5 - Data bus diagnostic interfaceJ533
"The data bus diagnostic interface -J533- is integrated into the onboard supply control unit -J519-. The data bus diagnostic interface -J533- is designed as a separate control unit on vehicles with recovery (regenerative braking force) only."
Which means the CAN Gateway is actually integrated into the BCM/Central electronics module
This is further verified by checking the advanced ID's in VCDS (The Hardware ID's are the same for both).
So right now the Polar FIS isn't compatible with the Polo, unless they make a special adapter.

I think you're right it's going to need a different cable/connection at minimum or a couple of new control modules in worst case. Looks like they've built the 2 bits into the one piece of hardware and done away with the connector inbetween....
