The Bury System 9 cradles connect to the Bury System 9 baseplate connector in the car (where the touch-adaptor plugs in). Which in turn connects to power, and the car's external GSM antenna.
There's no antenna in the cradle itself. This is paraphrased from the Bury Site, and confirmed from experience with the iPhone 4 version of the dock.

now that ive had sleep and a coffee what i meant to say was:

The base plate, considering it was installed for the bluetooth module, did they (vw) install the GPS/GSM/NextG antenna with it or is it just power?

GPS/GSM Antenna in the car to my knowledge.
If you get the Universal dock however, your ability to connect to the antenna may be limited by your combination of cables and/or phone.

Does it require a recode to use this adapter? The genuine VW branded iphone 4 adapter did not but I believe the bury sourced units do?

I'm hesitant to recommend a particular provider - but a search on google for bury "system 9" cradle iphone 5 gave me a few Australian sellers.
Cheapest I found including shipping was $91
