What a joke! Typical VW.

I currently have my Nexus 5 setup so bluetooth phone conenction connects to the touch adapter and the audio component goes to the VW Phone (which seems to be the RCD 310). When it works its acceptable, but it often fails to connect for some reason or another and the steering wheel controls do not work.
I had read somewhere recently (sorry cant remember where) there was a firmware upgrade to the touch adapter to allow stereo bluetooth rather than the mono that is currently produces.
Also wanted to see if anyone had any experiences with a bluetooth product called ViseeO Tune2Air WMA1000. It claims it can connect to the MDI and allow for streaming and display track information. It should also allow for the steering wheel controls to work as if an ipod was connected.
Installation is a breeze

You don't need coding for the RCD510, but you will need it if you want to remove the touch unit. Some people have managed to connect their phone direct to 'VW Phone', bypassing the touch unit.
Make sure the RCD510 is a Bosch unit (with a phone button on the front) otherwise you can't access your phone book or dial numbers. The cheap unit still does bluetooth audio and lets your answer calls though (and you can dial from the phone itself).

Thanks for your help mate.
I will do some more reading on the RCD510. Looks like the real ones are closer to $400.
have to decide if it's really important for me, $400 is still a bit of coin. Where as the bluetooth module should technically solve my issues for about $120.
Your help is much appreciated though.
