I got the comfortline 81tsi not 61tsi. Retail was $22,290 with no tint and 6 month rego.

    Polo Comfortline MY15 81TSI manual white $19790 + $1500 for Driving Comfort Pack = $21290. On order.

Other dealer said there were none and that what we wanted would be a factory order out of the promotional price period starting from RRP again to negotiate + corporate rate which was more than the promo price. Still seem to be a few about in other colours.

Is that not retail price for the manual?

That's the promotional price to end March for vehicles delivered by end April. The price is announced on the VW website without fanfare that it is a promotion (see the fine print on that page).

According to the price list at the dealer, usual price before promotion is 2-3k higher drive away. Don't recall the exact figure.

Who knows where the price will land in April? Dollar has been going up against the euro recently.....

Our previous MY09 2008 Polo TDI with safety pack (ESP, 7 airbags) rrp was about $27k driveaway.

The 1st dealer tried the whole; its a promotional price, thing on us. Saying the retail is higher and they cant move as there are no margins. Its never true. If its on the VW website, even if a promo, that to me is the current retail price. It always can be haggled lower and/or goodies thrown in (rego, mats, paint, options, tint etc).

All promo prices mean is that VW corporate gives extra incentives to make up for the shortfall of the original retails price (at least thats how Audi works so I am going to assume its the same here). As corporate VW is giving incentives, the promo price can be haggled.

Example how it was explained to me when Audi had a 'no gst' sale (example numbers only).

    Car is worth $70,000
    Promo makes it $65,000
Audi Corporate gave close to $5000 of incentives to dealer for the car sold because they lost $2,500 off the retail.

Haggling is a lot easier when they are trying to get rid of old stock and you will buy what they have. If you want what they don't have you don't have as much bargaining power.

The "No GST" sale is a marketing way to make a 9% discount sound like a 10% discount.

Thats why I had to haggle bloody hard to get mine for $20,990 with kit thrown in. It wasnt easy. When I bought an Audi in 2013 I was getting $5000 discounts just over the phone (ended up with $14,XXX off).

Anyways, its not a big monetary difference if I paid promo retail vs the haggled price I ended up with. But I'm one of the few who also enjoys buying cars and doing the whole spiel so I find it fun to haggle. I find being honest with them about your budget and [most importantly] making them think/know your a serious buyer, not a tire kicked or price comparer, is the key.

Unfortunately, 7 days in and the car is going back for its first warranty claim - the air con has failed! Lights come on the button, but unfortunately the compressor doesn't kick in.

40 degrees yesterday, but only 38 today, so feels a little less like being in a tumble drier!
