Agressive wheel fitment

Sup all,

Have an MY14 Polo GTI and planning on being fairly aggressive (i think?) fitting 17x8.5J ET20 squeezed onto the stock 215's with BC or H&R coils going as low as I can go without hitting.

I have seen how 17x8j ET30 on 215s fit so I know ET20 should be fine for the rear but I am a tad concerned about the front sticking too much. From what I can gather wheel width doesn't really matter given that tyre size is remaining the same but the additional 1cm in offset (from ET30) will bring the tyres even closer to the front guard....

Anyone running ET20 and/or pulled their guards slightly to fit? I am thinking ET20 on the front is just going to come out too far...

I'm running 17 x 8.25 +38 offset (std tyres) and wheels are flush at front. Lowered to about 323mm hub to arch at front and this works well but its just rubbing very slightly at front/s when pushed extremely hard when turning at speed through a dip or spoon drain.

What you are proposing is going to need work to front guards/liners, don't know about backs.

Having said that there seems to be a slight difference from my 2013 Polo in that the liner fixings are not protruding so much in my 2015.

Interesting. Yeah the car I saw is running 17x8j ET35 on 215's with no problem. Given that I would be squeezing the 8.5's onto the same tyre size it would mean that ET20 is really only 1.5cm further out then his current position which I am going to measure tomorrow. On his rears at ET35 he is getting 15mm spacers to bring the wheels out for slight poke which would be effectively the same as ET20.

That said given the measuring I have done last night on my stocks I think I am going to settle for ET30 and use spacers at the back if I can't get a staggered offset. That is a moderate 5mm more on what I've seen with ET35 which should be fine.

Granted his does hit liner sometimes from memory but only with a full car which is expected. My car is usually only 1 or 2 people so should be fine.

It's regarding wheels for my Polo 6R and if the wheels i am interested in might be to wide. It seems that 8j is the widest you would want to go, atleast when it comes to 18" wheels.

The wheels i am interested in is only 17" but as wide as 8.25J with ET35. Im planning to lower the car aswell with HR 25/40 springs.

So the question is, will they fit or will the extra 0,25inch make me rub/poke too much?

Im thinking wheelsize 215/40/17

Welcome to the forum.

It's practicality versus an aggressive look. If you are not worried about about the bit of rubbing you will get at the fronts with the car lowered, go for it. It will likely not do any damage. I prefer to drive without making allowances for road imperfections and high speed dips.

With those springs you may be OK anyway.

Yeah the 25/40 springs are quiet conservative drop wise, so I think you should be fine.

That will be fine. At ET35 expect no rubbing unless your back seat is full from what I have seen. The rim width won't matter if the tyre size is the same. Think about it, 0.5 inch is 1.2cm in additional width on the same tyre, only half of which is going to poke out on the facing side so it's like 0.6cm on 8.5j or 0.3cm on 8.25j. I wouldn't worry about it, just worry about tyre width and offset if you are sticking below 8.5j

I do have people quite often in the back of my car since im in a car pool for work. But the hell with it, you gotta look cool

Now i only have to decide wich color im gonna go with. What you guys think for a Candy White polo? Bronze or matte black?

The only thing you have to worry about when dropping it a lot is cambering and the inside of the wheel hitting the strut. From what I've been told it's only about 3 degrees standard cambering without any camber adjustment purely through the motion of lowering the car. You will be fine though with those wheels, I have seen them on a bunch of polos in ET35 low as hell with no problems. I was actually going to get these wheels myself in matte black on candy white prior to finding some other wheels (which funnily enough don't fit) with a ET35 Front, ET25 rear staggered setup. Slightly risky but I have seen ET35 all around on 215's up close on @spares ride above and he plans for 10mm spacers at the back which look like it wont' have any problems. Put some pics up when they are on.
