Just a note for all those living in NSW
An important requirement for all replacement wheels is that the wheel track must not be increased by more than25mm beyond the maximum specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that vehicle.Where non original axle or suspension components are fitted, the offset of the wheel in relation to the axle or stub axle assembly used shall not be increased by more than 12.5mm each side of the vehicle based on the specifications of the axle components used.
    and
Wheels up to 26mm wider than the largest optional wheel recommended by the vehicle manufacturer for the vehicle can be fitted without the need to notify the RTA.
    2nd page - http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registrati...vsi09_rev4.pdf

So you can legally go 1" wider in rims than the maximum specified and maximum reduction in offset is 13mm (rounding up). If you're interested in maintaining legality that is.....

Anyone worried about "defects" shouldn't modify their cars. Everyone I'm sure is aware of the laws and mod at their own risk.

Audi A1 come with an Optional 18x8.5" +42Offset wheel so I can run my wheels no problems. Only thing is the offset but really I could tell em its +30 and they wouldn't have a clue.

This! Put quite simply, Victoria is just a 'nanny' state anyway. Laws are laws yes...but the general population in the car enthusiast arena just don't give a hoot about those stringent laws associated to vehicle modification.

    Isn't that 18x7.5?

It's all well and good to not follow the regs... but if you have an accident and this "defects" are found you could be with insurance coverage.

I believe the A1 has 2 18" wheel options and one is 8.5" from memory. Again this is something you need to understand with modding. Any modification be it small or big is going to cause void warranty or insurnace issues. If you are into modding and changing your car but you worry about warranty and insurance... well all i can say to you is your in the wrong hobby and you need to go back to OEM.

With insurance, if you can prove that the illegal mod did not contribute to the accident then the insurer cannot refuse your claim.

yeah, good luck with that one. "But sir, my illegal modification that has made the vehicle unroadworthy and hence it needs to be recomplied with an engineers certificate that I do not have and a certificate of re-compliance that I also do not have did not cause the accident"

Response by Judge in court: "Duly noted but if your illegal, unroadworthy vehicle was not on the road to begin with due to being illegally modified without compliance, there wouldn't have been a crash (they aren't accidents) that you would have been involved in and instead of listening to you making excuses, I could be playing golf..."

It's not just your personal insurance, your local roads authority (here in Vic it's the TAC) will not cover any injury that occurs to you and sometimes they can also take you to court to recover the costs of any injury and associated rehabilitation as well as compensation for any other party involved.

Run the risk by all means but if you crash into me, to quote full metal jacket "I will gouge out your eyeballs and skull-f**k you", to put it nicely.

I mod my car yes, I wear the implications with warranty yes. BUT! NEVER WILL I MODIFY MY VEHICLE TO THE DETRIMENT TO MY SAFETY, THE SAFETY OF MY PASSENGERS AND/OR THE SAFETY OF OTHER ROAD USERS.

Does anyone know if 18x8" +35 offset with either 225/35/R18 or 215/35/R18 tyres will fit the guards and not scrub when lowered?

Alternatively, I could choose 18x8" +40 offset with those same options in tyres...

Best case scenario would be to fill the guards out as much as possible and at the same time improve traction all without any tyre scrub
