APR Australia has a tune for the gen3 1.8 TSI in the A3 already, 187kw and 404NM, I'm expecting similar figures for the GTI when released. Contact Guy at APR Australia directly to get the latest on where this at.

And Gary is correct, same block essentially for the 1.8 and the 2.0. 1.8 is a short stroke version which potentially could love revs just a tiny bit more than the 2.0

The cylinder spacing in the 2 litre and the 1.8 litre are both 88 mm.
The bore diameter in 1.8 litre and the 2 litre is 82.5 mm.
The difference is capacity comes from the stroke, the 1.8 litre is 84.1 mm and the 2 litre is 92.8 mm.
Both blocks are quoted as weighing 33 kgs.

    Hi Sydneykid,

This is where I read the information about "thinner walls"

"...The 1798cc four-cylinder – still known internally as a EA888, according to Volkswagen engine expert Ralph Schirmer – sports a new steel block that has been put on a diet, with 3.0mm walls that are half a millimetre thinner than those on the 1998cc version. "

Now that you mention it I read that review and remember the quote, but it's strange that both blocks are quoted as weighing 33 kgs. If the walls are 0.5 mm thinner it wouldn't concern me much as the shorter stroke in the 1.8L will put less side load on the block than 2.0L.

APR Already has the IP from the car (Both manual & 7speed DSG) - they have some calibration trips booked to both Australia & the UK in the near future to finalise the software.

It will not be a plug in box, it will be a properly calibrated ECU flash that will control fuel, timing and torque, not just intercept & multiply a boost signal like a tuning box.

I think 187kW might be worth the wait. Local APR agent said to me that "it's going to be insane".

+1....hope it is not too expensive for the tune

I'm quite sure that the ABT is a properly calibrated ECU as well.

Not digging onto you, just want to put the things right , since it is an ABT thread.

Agree with you Transporter, the ABT module is in effect like an ecu and should not be compared with many other 'tuning boxes'.

Actually I'm happy to debate what is inside the ABT box with fact rather than fiction, and esentially all the ABT box does is intercept the boost signal and sends a modified signal to the ECU to trick it into holding the wastegate shut (hence upping the boost). The ABT "piggyback" has no control over timing nor fuel. It hopes the ECU will compensate for the altered boost, but it can only do this to a fuel trim of around 10% before it pulls all the boost out again. This is fact.

Putting it in a fancy box with a big loom that does not go anywhere does not disguise the fact on how it technically operates. If anyone owns a box, there are some simple tests to do to prove it.

We have now removed several ABT boxes, we have the data & logs. We are going to send one of the boxes out to an independent electrical engineer just for fun, and we can get a third party report in.

Mind you I am happy to take it to a different thread, but as I was pulled into the thread on the APR side of things, and I have first hand experience with the ABT - I thought it might pay to clear up some information.

Here is a nice breakdown with some technical inputs on ECU tuning and how it started (a new video from a BMW company, released last week), but I think it's quite pertinent to this thread.
