    77tsi turbo

Hi all, just curious as to when the turbo charger comes into effect. I can notice a significant difference in power levels from 1st to 2nd gear (i don't think it kicks in till 2nd gear onwards). My apologies if this has been answered before. Cheers.

1st gear as well as (maybe) second will have a torque limiter on them so you're not spinning tyres and also to help preserve the gearbox. If you want to really know when, put it into 4th with real low rpm, put the foot down and note when the surge takes effect of the boost. That's generally max boost but anything before that is pretty much pointless anyway.

From data logs on my 77TSI customers' cars, full boost is mechanically achievable by 2000rpm, but is still ultimately controlled by the software.

For instance, the standard software only gets to full boost at around 2800-3000rpm (6psi), so the power-band is not as wide as it could/should be.

Our Stage 1 tune on the other hand, will get you to 8psi by just 2000rpm, making the car accelerate with much more torque from down low; and extending the boost curve all the way to around 5000rpm before tapering back down towards the rev limiter. The car ends up being more drivable at higher gears without the need to downshift as much.

    Congrats on the purchase!

Hi Babs, when i got mine, I wondered the same. In the end, I can't tell you the revs or technical stuff, I'm learning how this little beastie feels, sounds and moves. It does have a little "gentler" kick in 1st. Most noticeable in 2nd and 3rd, 4th. 5th and 6th forget it. In the lower gears very useful for hills and moving quickly in snarly situations, 5th and 6th are good for cruising open roads (which i STILL haven't managed to indulge in. ). I'm still amazed how quickly it builds-up speed. ... Dangerous (in terms of potential fines).

There is a noticeable surge from as low as 1500rpm......windows down you can hear the turbo spinning up from 1500-2000RPM...

John from DNA tuning is right about full boost from ~2800-3000rpm, there is always a nice amount of torque ready to go....

In certain situations you can feel the software limiting the boost most noticeable after a full throttle up shift (DSG) from 2nd to 3rd.....
In a manual transmission variant it could be different...

thanks for all the input guys. much appreciated.

baska i do agree with you in regards to accidental speeding (as i was used to revving the crap out of my charade previously just to get it up to speed) hehe

77kw polo TSi please do let us know how it's like after the tune. i just had a look at johns dna stage 1 tune graph and it looks like a pretty big boost in power.

Well. How do I put it ?
It's hard to describe, but I went though the install with John remote controlling the laptop linked into the car, then he signs off saying - "go for a gentle drive". So I did, and it seemed exactly the same as before. Smooth, progressive and fun. I thought not much changed here, so I waited till I got to an 80kmh zone and coming out of a side road in 2nd, I put the foot down, and as my foot sunk to the floor, the smile on my face got broader and broader.

In fact, I then took the long road back to my house to be sure the difference was as real as it felt. So from a standing start I squashed the pedal gently into the carpet, and boy oh boy - I thought he'd changed engine on me - it's awesome. It goes way up to the redline and bites hard from 3k RPM up. I did not (on this occasion) try to speed, but from sinking the accelerator and aiming for 80kmh, I looked at the speedo again and it had hit 110kmh...so I backed off to let the traffic behind me keep up.

In short - it's docile as it ever was when you want it to be, and it's the most fun I've had in a car with less than 2Ltrs ever. It's tremendous.

The process took around 10-15 minutes and is straight forwards. The results are superb.
