Have had our polo since 2010 and it has just had its 30000km/ 2 year service at 25 000 km. whilst away on a weekend trip last weekend before the service the oil low light came on!
This means the car was down at least 1/2 a litre of oil in 10000km. Similar happened before its 15000km service as well.
Does this seem excessive?
The service person at Gold Coast Volkswagen have said they will do an oil consumption test in 1000km however there allowable oil usage is up to 800mls per thousand Kay's! The seems unbeleviably high. Surely a car wouldn't pass modern emission standards using that much oil.
Any thought would be appreciated.
VW says that oil consumption may be as high as 0.5 l/1000 km.
Don't know where the dealer pulled out the figure of 0.8 l/1000km from.
"1/2 a litre of oil in 10000km" equates to 0.05 l/1000 km, which is well within limits.
Due to the long service intervals, the owner should regularly perform basic checks from time to time (especially before a long trip), like tyre pressures, fluid levels (oil, coolant, windscreen washer, etc) and so forth.
