77tsi Instrument Cluster backlight

Hey guys.

New to the 6R's, quick question! (Have had a look but found nothing, and do not have a manual).

I have noticed that cluster in these cars seem to illuminate themselves during the day in various stages off brightness.

My question is, should the backlight for the cluster automatically come on at night when you start the car or do they only switch themselves on during the day for added visibility? At night unless switching the headlights, only the needles light up.

I have read somewhere that they auto dim and brighten with a ambient light sensor?

Any info would be great!

The cluster has an ambient light sensor which increases the backlight brightness as ambient brightness increases, in exactly the same way the ambient light sensor works in your phone, laptop etc. The dials will not be illuminated at night unless headlights are switched on. Think of it as a safety feature so you can't go driving through the night without realising your proper headlights aren't on (the amount of people I see do this, especially cars with LED running lights).
