Ok, after going for a quick spin the other night with Eddie (Fastlane) I'm almost sold on the centre muffler delete for the Gti.

I spent yesterday going around to a few local exhaust shops to talk to them to see if they were up to the task.
I only plan on keeping the car for 2.5 years & would like everything to be stock when its goes up for sale then, therefore I like Gavs idea of using original clamps to be able to swap out but I need to know exactly what to do otherwise the exhaust shop is not going to do the work properly & just take creative license that might be a PITA later.

    Questions:
-Is there a part number for the VW clamps or just ask for a 55mm exhaust clamp? $18 right?

-Is it worth rewelding a hanger on where the the standard one is?

-In the picture below, where did you cut the muffler? If its the green line where its straight? Is there enough room for a clamp or to re-weld something later, it looks like its in an awkward place. I'm thinking of getting it cut at the blue or green line & either getting the new pipe flared & use the clamp or fix it over the cut end, or if the exhaust shop really bitch and moan about it sealing properly (like one shop I mentioned it to yesterday) get it welded at either point instead.

-And I know its been discussed earlier in the thread, but will a resonator (hot dog) muffle the DSG cutting a fart or only make the acceleration note quieter? I'm not chasing increase in general exhaust noise, I just like the DSG cut noise. The Inoxcar setup below looks like they have a smaller muffler instead of a complete delete, has anyone done this or heard what it sounds like?

    Thanks in advance,
    Cheers
    Rob

Yes there is a part number but stuffed if I can remember where I got it from!

I cut mine at the green but by cutting it there, you can't refit the muffler. The best possible way would be to cut at the blue line and get flanges welded on where the cut at the blue line is. Then you can bolt the muffler back in when required. To fit the pipe, a new hanger is recommended but not 100% required, they will also need to bend up a bit of pipe too so it fits.

Look at those pics of the Inoxcar installed: very simple and easy to mount back the original muffler using another metal band as the original...
Those pics are referred to complete muffler delete... The sound is great and not annoyng or excessive at all...

The original pipe in this case was cut on your blue line...

Grazie Mille Kawabunga & Gavs for your advice.

I think I will take a picture of the Inoxcar setup & get them to make something thats the same. I might experiment with a small diameter 'hot dog' only if the sound gets irritating...........to my neighbours.

It looks like I will be goin down the same avenue as DETROITCANDY and use a bit of bent pipes and clamps, just for the fact that the 77TSI has a compleatly different exahust design.

Had to work out somthing a little different with the exhaust people but $110 later and I should have it. Why the resonator is at the back side of the car on the bend is anyone's guess. Would be nice if they kept it all the same, just hope it will still sound good like the GTI's!

Rob, like you, I was also sold after riding in Eddie's car.

when are you getting this done? I want to do mine too and I like your ideas about the flange pieces to return back to stock if need be

Ok, so I just had my resonator deleted. I printed pics of Inox's car and showed him pictures.
I asked for it to be done the same so it's interchangeable. We agreed to use slip joints just like Inox's.

Although I do like the sound, i'm not completely satisfied with their work. From these pictures you can see that they used a clamp instead of slip joints tightened with alan keys like Inox's and also the bends are not the same diameter as the rest of the pipe so it is more restrictive.

Should I be taking this back and getting it re-done?

You will only get the bends the same diameter if you get a mandrel bent pipe.

All pipes done on a normal bender will come out like that

As hillbilly has said, without hydro forming or mandrel bending, that is always how the pipe will end up.

The sleeve clamp you have shown is the factory exhaust clamp, I can't really see how the front of the new pipe is joined on but I just used another of those factory pipe clamps.

Gav, in the last picture you can see how it is attached to the front pipe. It's one of those clamp things.

If you can let me know where u purchased the factory pipe clamp it would be great as it will look much neater and stock looking.

    Cheers, Gary.
