6C MY16 GTI - 30,000kms service

Hi Guys,

Just had the above mentioned major service completed yesterday. Apart from the major service items completed, I had a few niggles looked at;

* Hesitation under light throttle load when cold. Plugs not fouled and intake manifold clean. Turned out to be a very dirty and thus partially blocked petrol filter. Admittedly, have been sticking to MOBIL 98 RON mainly (90% of fills) but not anymore. Recommended to use BP first then Caltex for next choice if BP not available. This is based on customer cars along with their Stage 3 APR MK7 Golf R achieving 20ATWKW more on BP.

* Manual gearbox didn't like to be 'rushed', notably 3rd gear was problematic on up or downshift. Turned out to be misaligned gear shift cables from the factory. VW Dealer in Newcastle at 5000kms told me, 'Agreed, doesn't feel right but don't worry as 3rd gear synchro takes longer to bed in compared to other gears'

All up, $580 including diagnosis for the gearbox issue. You could save a little on getting FUCHS 5W30 cheaper via wholesale but only by $30 bring it to $550.

Did they do the Pollen Filter and Brake Fluid as part of your 2yr / 30,000km service (included in the price of $580)?

Is Shell V-Power available in Canberra? I am sure it is, I use it exclusively in the Jetta. However I use BP in the Passat!

Yes, All filters (oil/air/pollen) changed but not the brake fluid. They are of the belief that every two years is overkill and are trying to reduce ownership costs to beat the 'fixed price' costs over 5yrs.

Haha! All capital city premium fuels are available in Canberra. They even recommended Caltex Premium Diesel for our 508SW.

The only reason why I asked was (and just incase you do not know) VW does do capped price services; https://au.volkswagen.com.au/service-pricing-guide/

My estimate of your service is $423 + $65 for Pollen Filter.
I understand that you did not get the brake fluid done, bit risky if you ask me (and strange that the workshop is not up-selling this - now it makes sense though! They do not offer to make their service offering sound more reasonable than the dealers, when clearly it is not). Anyhow I am sure you can get this done at anytime...

VW Brake Fluid is a Class 6 Fluid and can be purchased in a 1L can quite cheaply...

And I wasn't implying that the ACT does not get good fuels, just you never mentioned the Shell V-Power Fuel.
I actually used to live in Flynn (ACT) - I love Canberra!!!

Appreciate your sentiments OPE126.... no troubles at all.

My first service with the local Canberra dealer was woeful so am keen to stay away. Considering another dealer in Newcastle told me synchro wears at a different rate, I hate being lied to.

This independent employees a number of ex-factory techs, and is headed up by an ex-dealer Foreman along with the only APR Dealer in Canberra.

Am very pleased with their advice and bear in mind, the price I paid was far better value than the fixed price offered by Dealers. I had issues with gear selection and, poor fuel flow. These guys were all over it like a fat kid on a smartie!

Since over 90% of the fuel sold in service stations is imported into Australia and storage terminals are shared between brands there is no way of knowing that the BP we buy today isn't the same as the Caltex that we buy next week or the Shell we bought last week.
