66TDI Highway RPM (Possibly other models)

In the market for a car with the best possible highway economy for the 45km each way drive to/from work. My little Mazda 323 does 7.2L/100km highway and urban, because it sits on 3200rpm in fifth at 100km/h!

I've been looking at 6R Polo's and have my heart set on a 66TDI manual. However, I note that they are a gear short of the 77TSI manual and two gears short of the DSG's. I don't care what the gaps are between the ratio's as long as fifth gear is tall enough.

    I've found it completely impossible to find a table of gearing ratio's for the 6R Polo so I can't calculate RPM. I'm hoping someone who owns these cars can tell me what RPM the cars sit at doing 100km/h in top gear;
    - 77TSI 6-speed
    - 66TDI 5-speed
    - 66TDI 7-speed

On a side note, is there a 6R Polo fuel economy thread around here somewhere? Can find one for almost every other VW.

66TDI Highway RPM (Possibly other models)

From the top of my head, my sister's 66TDI Manual sits somewhere around 1800-2200 rpm at 100 km/h in 5th.

Actually, seeming you're concerned about fuel consumption, put it his way:

Last year, when we drove from Melbourne to Sydney in the Polo, we filled it up before we left (45 litres) and once we reached Sydney the trip meter still said we had 80 kms remaining. That's driving at 110 km/h the whole way.

From memory I averaged 5.9 last time I drove to Nelson Bay at 110km/h...ish (7 speed DSG)

Keep in mind that I first had to get from Drummoyne to the start of the F3 which is a pain.

    Averages 2000RPM and 2400RPM between 100km/h and 120km/h in 6th gear.

Fuel average on the motorway at 110km/h (i do this every morning) 5.8lt/100km

On the freeway I get about 2200rpm at 100km/h (77tsi / DSG). My average city commute gets me about 6.0L/100 and the lowest I have got on a country run was 4.9.

You have to remember it's not just the gearing that effects fuel economy. It's also how efficient the engine is and wind/tyre resistance. On the freeway I cruise at about 3.9L (instantanious) if I floor it in 7th it will hit a max of about 10L/100 until the revs climb and more air/fuel can be burnt (by about 3000rpm it's about 28L/100)

Also I'm pretty sure the Polo's brochure does show gear ratios as I did the same thing when I was looking at my car.

There's more to highway fuel economy than tall gearing.

Any of the vehicles you have mentioned will crap all over your 5 speed Mazda for economy.

A mate has a 77tsi DSG. Thrashes the pants off it & averages in the low 6s.

    Our 77TSI does 5.1 on a trip.

I would suggest a diesel wouldn't like constant short trips where it barely gets time to get fully warmed up and thus could suffer from DPF problems due to this.

A petrol one would give almost the same results with less potential problems.

The technology improved and the latest TDIs don't have too many problems with the DPF in city driving conditions like they had at the beginning, when the technology was new.

My daughter's 2012 TDI Tiguan is doing very short trips almost daily. She drives 7km to work, right in the middle of Adelaide (it can't be more severe than that) and after 2 years the DPF is fine, the car should see at least 200,000km out of the DPF exhaust.
