You can make some VCDS adjustments to increase MFD accuracy.

Sorry for the resurection, wasn't sure if i should post here or make a new one.

I'm looking at getting either a 81TSI Polo or a GTI Polo in manual, but i need it to be good on fuel at the same time. Just wondering if anyones got some more long term figures of their fuel consumption. I would be doing around 90+% highway driving with the car so any info like that would be great. Cheers

Owned the 81TSI for 6months+ now. Since buying it i have averaged 5.5L/100 Driving pretty conservatively, with about 50/50 split of driving between highways and 50/60kmhr roads. Around where i live is also quite hilly which will always increase it a bit.

If i was doing 90% highway, based on my experience, i'd average 4.5-5L/100. (Once did a trip Gold Coast-Toowoomba and combined both ways was around 4.2L/100)

I have the "thirsty" EA888 Gen1 1.8tsi in a much heavier Skoda Octavia manual that has been remapped and a few other mods to make it thirstier. When I was doing 80% highway running I averaged 6.6L/100 on 98ron, so a Polo should be a fraction better but not much as you are already rolling. I now do 80% suburban driving and get about 8L/100km but again, a Polo would be better due to less weight and it has the Gen3 EA888.

By comparison, I took a MK7 Golf 90tsi to Broken Hill and back last month and averaged about the same but about 1/3 of the trip was at 140kph and we did lots of full throttle overtakes.

I would think that a properly run-in GTI Polo would get close to 6.0L/100km average with 80% highway driving.

    Cheers guys, really appreciate it.

I'm checking out a GTI and a 81TSI Comfortline on the weekend so i may have a new polo, or not, we will see.

The numbers look good though, a lot better than my previous car which was a 2010 Forester XT. But then again that's a lot bigger of a car lol. I used to get 9-9.5 L/100km at best on the freeway with it.

My MY16 Polo GTI manual with 3500 kms on the clock is averaging 6.5 l/100kms. The best economy I've had so far is on a trip from Canberra to Junee return, where I achieved 5.5 l/100kms. I drive it reasonably hard too - 2nd gear is regularly pedal to the metal.

I am averaging around 9-10 per 100klm. I am not gentle with it and regularly put the boot into it. I am sure if i drove more sedately and fuel conscious I would get around the 7 mark. These are small sporty machines and deserve to be drive that way. Whats the point of having a car and not driving it the way the designer intended.

It's just a shopping trolley engine. It's no different to what they put in Passats, Superbs, Skoda Scouts, Octavias and other VW product.

And yes, you must be thrashing it if you are getting 9L/100km.
