2014 Cross Polo, Composition Media infotainment system

Well ... what we used to call a "radio." I use the term in the subject because I can't find the unit identified by model other than on the front of the dedicated owner's manual. This is what's on the spec sheet:

Radio “Composition Media” incl. 6.5” colour touchscreen, CD drive - MP3 and WMA file compatible, USB interface, AUX-IN jack, SD card slot and iPod HMI
New car for me Cross Polo, which in NZ is well-equipped. Just missing the cool LED headlights and NAV.

I can't understand the phone integration. Paired over Bluetooth with an IPhone 5C the phone part works acceptably. The audio streaming part will only work with whatever track you currently have cued (paused) on the phone. But by law I can't hold the phone when I'm driving, but it's OK if I have it attached to the dash somehow.

If I plug the Apple cable to the USB port I can rummage around all the media on the phone via the console - very cool. BUT, now the phone integration is gone because the Bluetooth can't co-exist with the USB HMI.

What's the story here - is it really that hard to make everything work?

The unit also has MirrorLink but it's not enabled - I probably have to sign-over my first-born to the dealer for that. I gather that's integration for participating Android vendors. I would like equivalent capability with the iPhone however.

Edit: I see on another post that you can turn off BT audio - will try that today.
Edit: That didn't go well - it really got confused and seemed to be playing two tracks at once, one over each interface.
