Hi all
I've tried searching the site for information about any Polo steering rack issues without success, but if I've missed it, I apologise in advance.
To the story - spouse has a 2012 Polo 77TSI 7-speed auto and it's the daily driver. Yesterday it had its 75k service and the repairer suggested that the steering rack was on its way out and should be replace along with a couple of new tyres at the front and a wheel alignment - all up $2.5k. I can understand the tyres and possibly the alignment being due, but a new steering rack at 75k, that's almost in consumable parts territory. I certainly would have expected more. The mechanic suggested that when the rack goes, it can be a catastrophic failure, which of course alarmed the little woman. That said, I have had plenty of good work done by my repairer and I have confidence in his shop's judgement.
Is this a genuine issue with these vehicles? The only indication we had was that we had a small rattle when stopped in gear and brakes on (at traffic lights for example) and a very slight shudder in the front end as you rolled to stop (which we thought might be brakes).
Any tips welcome.
Cheers
Bob
