    2011 Polo 6R 1.6TDI - Air Intake error

    Hi,

My sons 2011 Polo 16.TDI (engine CAYB) had the glow lamp error start flashing and the car lost power. Also the MIL light came on.

I have plugged in my VCDS cable and get the following error:

    1 Fault Found:
7338 - Leak in Air Intake System
    P2279 00 [237] - -
MIL ON - Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
    Freeze Frame:
    Fault Status: 00000001
    Fault Priority: 2
    Fault Frequency: 8
    Mileage: 147777 km
    Date: 2016.02.05
    Time: 12:46:24

I have looked for any obvious leaks from any of the hoses but can't see anything. Also can't hear an obvious leak.

Is there anything else specific to the Polo 6R 1.6TDI that I should be looking for? Otherwise it sounds like an expensive trip to a VW specialist to identify the problem which for a student who only bought the car 3 months ago is not very appealing!

    Any assistance would be great.

It'll be a leak somewhere after the MAF sensor (the part on the intake hose that has Continental written on it). Could be a vacuum leak, intercooler piping leak, manifold leak (gasket etc) but is most likely (I assume) before the turbo, as there would be vacuum before the turbo and boost after it.
I would thoroughly check all piping between the MAF sensor and the turbo as well as any vacuum lines that run into that piping. Even a slight leak after the MAF sensor can throw codes because the ECU has no idea that the extra air is being drawn in.

Many thanks for your advice. I had a good hunt around but still couldn't see anything obvious so we took it to the specialist who identified a leak in the intercooler hose. $220 to fix this, so not too bad.

    Thanks again.
