ABSOLUTELY! So sorry to hear that man! Did you get any warning? was it noisy to start with or did it just come out of nowhere?
Perhaps prepare youself too (if you have not already). Get all the laws and acts that relate to this, know what the wording is in relation to 'fit for purpose' and the consumer law etc. Reach out to others who have had this happen to them and the ones here that have had their chains changed (and multiple times on occasions like mine)
If we can be of any help please do reach out.

If you're in need of any 6n1 parts, odds are that I am going to have them (dismantling 2 at the moment)
Why didn't you do something about it when the rattle started instead of letting it get so bad the chain jumped?
A progress update:
To recap, my 2010 Polo 77 Tsi 6R destroyed itself due to faulty timing chain tensioner. 65000km on the clock.
I've now heard back from VW Good Will and they have offered 100% parts, 70% labour. 0% for diagnosing the problem so will still be $850+ out of pocket for labour changing an engine and confirming it was their rubbish tensioner at fault. Next I will try Dept of Consumer Affairs (WA) and try and get better outcome.
Not very happy with this car. It already had its DSG clutches replaced around 20,000km under warranty. What next?
Actually very happy with dealer's service centre. They have been great so far.

They are shafting you with the diagnostic fee. As they have applied good will then the whole job needs to be accounted for as a warranty job, meaning they need to account for labour time as per the repair times manual. That should save you some money because they won't be able to inflate the rates, also diagnostic time is incorporated into the warranty job itself.

10 years experience working for Audi/VW/Skoda
Now in Perth NOR, Western Australia.
The dealer was John Hughes in vic park (WA). The service manager has been very good to deal with.
As for VW Group Australia, I think not paying for diagnosing the fault is lame, particularly as they require it to be done by their representative in order to assess the 'good will' claim. I don't see any reason to distinguish between parts and labour either other than as a bargaining ploy. It is the cost of the repair to make the fault good.
Will be seeing what happens with DOCEP (WA regulator of consumer laws) in a few days. Meanwhile the car sits in the workshop.
For others, here's the word from ACCC. These are national regulations and pretty clear.

Does anyone know if vw dealers should replace timing chain guides when replacing tensioner and chain??
think l've got the rattle back Only done 9K .WTF.
Hi All,
This informative thread has prompted me to join Watercooled and throw in my input as I believe I am about to go through the same fun & games. The story so far is that I am the 2nd owner of a 2010 77Tsi with about 86,000km on it. Went to start it the other day and it cranks but won't kick over. Sounds like something expensive is wrong with it.
So after researching over the last couple of days, its seeming more and more like the dreaded Skipped Tooth issue. For those who have managed to have VW cover all or partial costs, was this only possible through the service department at a VW dealer? I plan to have mine towed to a Specialist workshop to diagnose and advise me from there.
Was a recall done in Australia relating to this issue? I do have a couple of recall stickers on my door jam but I believe they were only to do with DSG.
Cheers.
Seb
Thanks for the very informative thread guys.
My wife bought a 2010 MY11 VW Golf 77TSI in early 2011. Driven sedately for the most part with majority of kms on the highway. It has 68k on it now, serviced regularly but not at VW. It has started making the rattling noise on cold starts intermittently but it normally goes away after about 10 seconds.
I've taken it to VW Austral in Brisbane and it didn't make the noise yesterday but has done so today.
They just rang me then and said they need 4 hours of labour to strip the engine to 100% diagnose the issue and then will apply for goodwill from VW Australia. Does this sound like the regular process to you guys?
Not keen on them stripping it, finding out that it's something not quite the same and then being charged the whole lot for it.
This is the newest car I've ever owned and the most troublesome. I think I'll go back to Toyota's after this is sorted.
