Super stoked to find this thread, I've just purchased a Polo 2011 for my partner, and have discovered it has the dreaded timing chain issue. Its with VW right now. They were initially resistant due to the vehicle being S/H and out of warranty but it only has 69,000klms and is in mint condition, and has a good service history although not with VW.
I explained the "known issue" and "fit for purpose ACCC rules and also verified I was the owner of 4 VW vehicles. I'm still waiting to hear from them, but the vehicle is not driveable due to the condition of the chain and I guess its partially disassembled and waiting on parts and verification of warranty.
I'll report back what happens, but it is ridiculous that the service department immediately resorted to this is whats wrong and this is what you will need to pay to fix it, when a timing chain clearly should last the life of the engine and the ignorant service advisor assumed it was changed at 110,000klms like a belt.

Absolutely! Aim for 100% parts and labour !

I am on my second chain at 110,000kms both 100% warranty jobs, I don't believe they have fixed the problem as its starting to come back again...

Hope it works out for you

Hmm was told by the service manager that "fit for purpose" does not apply to the second owner, thats not my understanding of the Consumer laws. I'm in retail myself, and have always accepted that if a product I've sold has an unreasonable life span or failure, then regardless of owner status I'm obligated to assist with rectifying an issue.

I've not heard of that either, but would it be the first time that someone from a dealership was speaking through a passage around ones behind?

I don't see the difference as what if you bought an ex-demo car that had been registered by the dealership first? Your're not the first owner then either but from a VW perspective they would class you as the 'first' so sounds like a bit of thinking on ones feet of the best excuse to send you packing.

Quick call to consumer affairs will give you something concrete to go on.

    Good luck.

Its the product thats either fit for purpose or not, irrespective of the ownership status. So smells like more Dealer BS to me. Time for some consumer advice for sure, but Id have laughed in his face when he said that. You might also want to ring VWA and talk this though with them, they may be unhappy with the dealer response, then again...

As weve spoken about in another thread, the more i read and experience with dealers the more I wonder what the future holds. Dealers need to change or they wont need a service dept, it will just exist for the few warranty claims they accept... which might just become a central workshop owned by the importer - a win win in my book, it would be faster (decisions from the importer always seem to take the most time on any work) and a single standard of work done.

FWIW In the past dealers who have serviced my cars have dented them once and scratched them on numerous occasions, 'polished' the bonnet with a grit laden rag and even broken the fixing tabs off parts like headlights. All denied but fixed under goodwill when pushed. They also used non OEM parts, like generic 'jubilee' hose clamps without concern, but if you had done that, well... And once they over tightened handbrake that locked on on the motorway once the brakes overheated! IMHO Anyone can make a mistake but you may well be better off finding a specialist for more reasons than just the cheaper price if youre forced to pay for this work anyway. just my 2c.

Just got a call from the service department at Northern Rivers NW in Lismore, VW have agreed to pay 100% of the parts (chain, tensioner, seals) and 70% of the labour, my bill is now only approx $240, instead of $1280. Very happy with the outcome, considering I purchased the car only 3 weeks ago and was the second owner.
Thanks for the support and advice JonW and pontiff! Thanks to all other other thread respondents too, your stories really helped bolster my case to VW.

I also had the issue with a 2010 77 TSI, second owner, service history not entirely VW and 55k on the clock. My mechanic actually advised me of the issue and coached me through approaching VW about it.
Outcome was 100% parts 70% labour, at Essendon VW ended up costing about $200.
I was told by the dealer when I enquired about the warranty on the repair (2 yrs/50k) that the rules have recently changed, and if VW were covering the entire cost there would be no warranty on the repair.

I'd be interested to hear people's experiences with the issue reoccurring after repair?

I had 100% parts and labour both times.. First was VWA covering it all, 2nd time was VW dealer claiming on the '2 year parts warranty' on the chain and once again, i was not out of pocket at all.

I must admit, if they do not update the chain to a new newer one, I might just bite the bullet and get it done with a febi bilstein chain replacement kit which is available as VW don't appear to be on top of this issue yet when it gets that point

My 2010 Polo 77tsi (MY11) has 65000km and is in the local dealership at the moment

It had the rattle on starting which went bad and the car would not start. The service folk have diagnosed the issue as a slipped timing chain resulting in valves hitting the pistons. The fix is to replace the engine but at this stage no word back from VW "Good Will". I am expecting they will offer something less than 100% but I wont be happy with that. 65000 for a timing chain is not "Fit for Purpose". Not even for a belt either.

    Other threads on this issue:
Polo TSI 2010 problems - snapped timing belt
CAM chain tensioners failing..... TSI engines.

I will post back with progress...
