If you're in need of any 6n1 parts, odds are that I am going to have them (dismantling 2 at the moment)
Well I suspected mine was on its way out since I bought the car a month ago- a bit of a rattle on maybe 20% of cold starts?
Last night, boom tischk, chain rattling it's little heart out and it won't stop. *sigh*
2010 77TSI 108,000km.
Third owner, two years and 10,000km out of warranty with two non-VW services. Looks like I'll be up for the full cost.
Not necessarily so. I would take it to VW and try your damnedest to get them to cover it as its not an uncommon fault its something they knew about and are not active enough at resolving (imho)
Find the actual part of the act that mentions it, but surely a timing chain should be 'fit for purpose' a hell of a lot longer than 100,000kms.. BELTS i can understand, they need to be changed, but we are talking about a CHAIN! should be lifetime of the vehicle?

^^^^ what he says^^^
ACCC websites says what your statutory rights are. At worst, VW should cover parts & a % of the labour

I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
Just letting everyone know how I went!
Recap: Two years out of warranty, third owner, Full Service History BUT 2 non-VW services, 108,000km.
My chain rattle escalated suddenly and the car was undriveable, but it didn't skip teeth. I spoke to my local VW dealership who was EXCELLENT, could not have been more impressed. The day they got the car they called me back and said VW was paying 50% under goodwill! I did have a little bit of help from within though, which may or may not have made the difference.
It's costing me $660 for the UPDATED repair (as of two weeks ago the repair now includes a tensioner replacement which it did not before), which includes an oil change and a good look over of the car- this cost also incorporates the $155 diagnostic fee.
I am EXTREMELY happy.
I have got the rattle again, and it has only been 9 months and I have driven 17,500 km. I might have to take it in again.
The receipt mentions the part has a 2 year warranty, so hopefully it should be ok.
