    Question 1.4 TFSI Reliability

    Hi Guys,

Please forgive me if this has been asked before, i used the search feature and noticed complaints about high oil consumption.. ill get to my point.

Looking at buying a Fabia VRS 2014 (reason i am choosing over a polo GTI is this Fabia has new car warranty and is considerably cheaper then a polo gti)

I was about to go ahead on the purchase but then i started reading the horror stories of the 1.4tfsi motor.

What i would like to know is it really all true... are you guys having constant clutch dramas and constant engine replacements... i read some are up to there 3rd engine under warranty and when they receive there new engines some are faulty straight from the get go...

my plan for the vehicle is to never modify it as it is just a little daily. i have a weekend vehicle that will receive all the modifying goodies. I would like to keep the vehicle for 5 years. Is this a realistic idea or am i just going to be replacing engines under warranty and then when the warranty runs out have to scrap the vehicle?

Please forgive me if this has been asked many times, this is my first post on VW water-cooled.

I'm a Skoda fanatic. I think they are great cars but I wouldn't buy a Fabia vRS unless it was <$23k driveaway and it had 5 years VW warranty (not dealership warranty).

I'd also have a really close look for the build date (not the compliance date) because Skoda have a shocking habit of letting stuff sit in the holding yard for 2-3 years. I'd expect a further $2K discount for a 2013 build & an additional $2k for a 2012 build.

/looks - yep there are 2012 models with <1000km for $20k drive away.

Unless you are lucky, expect to have to negotiate to get various mods done under warranty to reduce oil consumption.

You'll have to run it on 98ron all the time & even then it won't stop it from running lean and cracking ring lands.

you might be lucky but if it was me, I'd be more inclined to get a 77tsi or an entry level Octavia.

3 years in and I haven't (knock on wood) had a single mechanical problem and still love my car to bits. That being said, I know one other Polo GTI well, and it has had mechanical problems. Anecdotally, that's a 50/50 shot which isn't great.

Make sure software is up to date and the chances of any issues are non-existant then. The early models ran an a/f ratio around 14s at full noise, update units drop it to around 11.3
