    09 BMW 125i to my13.5 Polo GTI

    Hey all,

Just joined (posted in the newbie area already ). In a nutshell, only bought my 09 BMW 125i last september, however I was living in Canberra then and was driving every day. Fast forward to today and im living in Brisbane and only drive my car on the weekend (pub transport during the week). For this reason plus lower insurance cost, lower repayments, lower fuel costs, extra 2 doors etc i've been heavily considering the polo gti as a replacement. I have actually like the car since 2010 but with didn't want to buy one in the early stages of the model lifecycle.

Now im looking at a base MY13.5 Polo GTI no options (well maybe sunroof if the price was right) and trading in my BM for it depending on valuation. My main query is, I don't want to trade down for cost savings and find I end up with way more headaches due to reliability. So i'm looking at the my13.5 as I believe it has the CTHE engine, but obviously i still have DSG concerns.

I've done some forum searching and haven't found many people who have the my13 or 13.5, possible as there may not be that many of them around. But im basically trying to work out if these later models have picked up in the the reliability area?.

I doubt I would keep the vehicle after the 3 year regular warranty period, but I would still be interested in the extended factory warranty cost and conditions (i.e. can it be bought after the sale of the vehicle, and is it a true warranty so everything is covered, none of this no interior trim or bodywork stuff that some of them dont cover.)

Sorry about the long post, but as its my first one I wanted to include as much detail as possible.

    Thanks for making it through
    Ash

According to Redbook an '09 125i is worth between $25 and $28k as a trade in, with the upper end of that range what a new Polo GTI costs.

Without knowing what you borrowed on the 1 Series, you may find that there is very little difference in repayments. There is also the potential that you may need to dip into your pocket to get out of it if you are 'under water' on the finance.

It'd also be worth getting quotes on insurance - how much would you actually be saving?

If you're not doing many kays the difference in petrol costs should be fairly insignificant.

Yeah saw those, horrific rip off but I guess u pay for convenience and no dealing with tyre kickers. Similar spec and kms for the 125 on carsales are going for 35k. Sedona red, boston lemon leather, auto, 62km, comfort access, m sport pack, business navigation, bi-xenon.

I'm right side up on the loan, owe approximately 15.5k on it. Insurance should save a couple of hundred nothing much, but need to call up Aami as I get inherited rating one from my partner. Also with finance the rate would be better as my current loan was @ 9.49%, looks like 7.45% is doable with other providers.

If you want to save some coin and you're after the 5dr, buy during this volksfest sale. They're basically selling them without on roads til 31st October. Thats $29,190 for the 5 door.

There's also 0% finance, but not on the Polo

just because they are asking $35k doesn't mean they are selling for that price.

I think you'll find the trade-in price will dissapoint & that sticking with the BMW will be no worse financially than buying a polo.

2% difference in finance on $16k is only a few hundred a year isn't it? Use what you aren't spending on fuel to pay a bit more on the loan.

No reason you cant scope it out though. If you aren't in love with the Bimmer & desperately want a Polo, just go for it.

If you are looking for a reliable car I think you have come to the wrong spot. If you are a gambling man then maybe you might get a good one, most likely you won't. MY13 and 13.5 still seem to have the same problems as any previous models. There are plenty of MY13's will oil consumption issues, DSG failures, clutch problems, timing chain problems, amongst an assortment of other less serious issues. Me thinks the DSG recall on all MY10-12 models is only because VW couldn't handle the enormous amount of cars that are actually affected at the same time. Dealerships would be at a standstill. I've got a sneaking suspicion that it's the calm before the storm so far. I doubt you'd find someone on here that hasn't had some warranty repair in their first year (would love to be proven wrong but I think they would be in the minority or not mechanically minded enough to realise that their car isn't doing what it should). If you want trouble free motoring your best bet is to go buy a Honda or Toyota, stay away from VAG products. I'd take a gamble on a Alfa or a Renault before I'd buy another VAG product, they seem like a safer bet. A BMW to Gti isn't going to be much cheaper for servicing, tyres, brakes etc.

MY12.5 Polo Gti. Bought new April, 2012. 16 months old. 13,000kms. No mechanic issues or warranty repairs.

Owners with no problems rarely post about it.
