Worth buying new over second hand?

Hi all, im looking at picking up a pogo gti relatively soon and im trying to decide if its worth spending the extra 3 grand to buy one new as the new models just around the corner..

not to mention that 3 grand would be better spent chipping a second hand one, its just so hard finding a decent one second hand with what im looking for

Most second hand models have around 40 - 60k on them, from what i read the timing belt is due at about 70ish, are there more expenses involved in buying a 2nd hand one over new?

The new ones will have a 1.4 twin charged system and DSG only.
I also think they have lost their uniqueness and look very much like the last model Toyota Echo from the rear.

I would go an older one as they will be cheaper, have the 1.8T and have a well documented history.
You can also choose what options etc you want as there would be quite a few of them on the market.

I would try for a 2008 onwards model as that way you can still get the extended warranty to cover yourself if need be.

Shouldn't be too many expenses if it's been serviced to schedule. Timing belt is due at 105k / 5 years. Control arm bushes will probably be shot at around 40-50k. There may be a few other squeaks and rattles but nothing too serious. You may be looking at looking at new brake pads and rotors at ~ 70k mark. Try to get one still in warranty if possible.

Also I have seen practically new ones (< 1000km) going for $23k to $25k before haggling. You may be up for a few months wait if you order the new model and I reckon it will be ~ 32k on the road. Looks sharp though and the DSG and fuel economy are tempting.

Also if you want to modify the car, the guys on here have experimented with all sorts of things on the 9N so will be able to help you get it set up nicely.

I think you'd be nuts to buy a brand new Polo GTI right now with the new model just around the corner.

Part of the reason I recently sold mine was I knew the price of the 9N3 model would drop when the new model hits, so regardless of which model you want (second hand 9N3, or brand new MKVI once they land) I'd be waiting until after the new model hits to purchase so the prices settle.

Modded polo's can be had for around $20k, the engines are likely to kick on a long time as has been seen in other models with the same engine and similar internals.

If you want to see what they are capable of, some of us are happy to show you their strengths and weaknesses.

Worth budgeting for suspension, they can feel a little lacking when chipped.

Thanks fellas, been looking at the current model, not the new 1.4tsi, but the big question is how much do you recon the 9n series will drop when the new tsi model hits?

I know the dealers are trying to flog them off atm and they seem like the sort of car that sits on the market for ages, ive been looking the last 4 months and literally nearly all the cars im looking at are still there.. Have test drove a few, unfortunately its been pissing down the last few weeks and havent really had a decent drive of one, ****ty melbourne weather atm

Love this little car but from what i can see it may be worth waiting till the new model hits as the prices may drop..

Any thoughts?

Mate it will always happen that prices will drop on superseded models. But the cheap price you can pick up a 2nd hand good quality Polo GTI now, I can't see it dropping that much. For eg, you wont find any under $10k, it just wont happen for the quality of car it is. Another thing, I've heard good and bad things about the 1.4TSI, I've driven a car with that engine before and was left a bit bored. The 1.8T in the 9n3 Polo however is an absolute cracker of an engine. I have a Golf 6 GTI now and the 2.0T is just flat and boring in comparison. I really miss the 1.8T, there is just so much potential, it's built so solid, there is so much history of its use through the VAG range, sound awesome, and it is veeery responsive. Possibly the best engine I've been in control.

As for new Polo GTI pricing, speaking with dealers, they are talking the base model will start closer to the $30k mark and then plus plus plus for options. I reckon the 9n3's will hold up for a bit, especially the lower km models.

Thanks Rhys, no doubt its a fun little car, i don't actually need a car as i work in the city, and no doubt buying one is always a bad investment if you don't need it..

But as every bloke here understands, ya just miss having something in the driveway to obsess over and what better car to obsess over than a vdub..

Price bracket, got a 20k budget but will go to 22, thing im worried about is if i buy now, by jan - feb next year the car will be lingering around the 15 - 18k mark.. as the 9n's are around $25k new nowdays..

Sorry for the haggling but im really trying to stop my self blowing the cash just yet as its burning a hole in my pocket n i really want one lol

wait till the new ones come out and are on the lots, and then values will drop, dealers may have some new stock or ex demo going cheap If its burning a hole earn some interest in the meantime lol
