    Window Tinting Voids Insurance!

I went to inquire about getting my windows tinted on the GTI and was told that if I go any darker than legal limit of 35% it could void my insurance. The insurance can claim that I have done something illegal to my car and they can refuse to pay.

Have any of you ever had problems with your insurance because of darker than legal tints on your car?

While we are on the same subject has anyone had their GTI tinted to 20% or 25%? How does it look (from the inside)? I wanted to do mine at 20% but the factory glass has a slight tint to it and im thinking about going to 25% instead.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Insurance companies will look for any way to get out of paying up. Having > 35% just gives them another reason!

Also if you get a cop with a bad attitude and they're really looking for something to book you with, having illegal tint gives the cop a reason to defect your car (my mate got pulled over because of his exhaust, it was just on the legal limit, so they defected his car because his tint was too dark)

Im not worried about defects. I think every car I have owned has had multiple defects including the GTI as of yesterday when I put a dual port BOV.

Im more concerned about writing off the car and then being told that they will not cover me.

The only real way to be sure is to check your policy. If they have something about car defects/illegal modifications then I'd be pretty cautious.

not worth it for the slightly extra tint imo. 35% looks fairly dark anyway, it blocks out heat plus it lets you see out of the car at night.

If the insurance company can prove your car was in a defective state at the time of an accident, and you knowingly contributed to this or were aware of it, then you should not be surprised if they don't honour the policy and pay your claim. That's the takeaway from the fine print in the policy document

    Is it Illegal

Ask the tint company if they have had any problems with other cars an that tint?. They wouldn't sell you anything illegal now would they? Or go and ask a policeman. If they find it too dark then they would be putting a defect sticker on the car in which case the tint company would be oblidged to change it.

    i got 35%

i think it looks goodand the car is noticably cooler in the afternoon.

imo there is no point risking putting an illegal tint on.
