I had the opportunity to go for a spin in Ant's red beastie today![]()
It's certainly given me something to think about! It's a very well put together car, all the pieces work well together.
A couple of non-power things I noticed straight-up:
The LWFW is quiet, hardly any chatter at all.. and I'm the type of person that gets driven insane by annoying noises! I'd been putting this mod off because I was worried about the chatter noise; It's quiet for all those wondering.
The coil-overs were very comfortable, noticeably stiffer but in a good way, not rattle your teeth-out way. Makes it feel like a little sports car and I can't wait for my KW's now
Now the power, like I said you have to look at the package because if I put that much grunt into mine at the moment, I would never get it to the ground. The suspension, bracing and tyres work very well to get it all to the ground. On paper, 20kw and 50Nm (between Ant's and mine) may not look like much, but it feels it!
Even with the standard K03, it has so much more top end. I think this might be because I'm running a few more stock parts (ic, tip, exhaust manifold). I can't wait to see what it does with the hybrid ball-bearing job. If it makes a similar torque curve but with more power like Ant mentioned above, I'll be signing up for one without a doubt!
In the meantime I'll get the IC and suspension sorted...
I was talking today how my missers would be happier if I slowly siphoned off 40K into the polo rather than spending it in one big chunk on a Golf or something. Gotta work with the minister of W&F haha. Obviously I won't be spending quite that much, as long as there's enough for a good kick![]()
Thanks Sam, glad you enjoyed it!
Just wondering if you remember if the aircon was on when you went for the spin? I think it was. The reason I mention it is the higher you have the fan setting with the aircon on the louder the chatter but not by much. And you can only hear it when stopped at the lights.
Yeah mate, the aircon was on at first, on 1 or 2, even then the only real time there was noticeable chatter was if it was in neutral and no foot on the clutch ...Then I thought 'what's this power-robbing device turned on for?' ..and turned it off haha.
Thanks again mate.
Hahaha nice one!
Does anyone know if the gudgeon pins on the BJX are floating or pressed?
If they're floating I was wondering if it would be possible to drop the sump and change the rods without having to fully remove the pistons or crank. Wishful thinking maybe
How good are the rest of the internals exactly. So far the rods have been identified as a weak link. Hows the crank and pistons? Would there be anything else worth doing while I'm there?
If the head has to come off, is there anything special to know about the BJX engine. I've done a few ground-up rebuilds but wanted to know if there's any nuances with the pog engines. Off the top of my head I see the process going something like this --
Drop sump,
Remove complete cylinder head,
Unbolt rods and remove from block,
Refit new rods to pistons,
Refit rods and pistons to block with new bearings,
Refit head with new bolts and head gasket.
Refit sump with new gasket.
Over simplification obviously, but give it a nice weekend and I don't think I'd have much trouble knocking that off..
Holy mother of God am looking forward to this![]()
Mate jump on uk-polos.net and have a look at 9N3 Turbos epic build thread. Heaps of pics and info form a guy who pretty much built his entire car. The thread is called Black GTI 6 Speed 320BHP.
Cheers
Without doubt its sump off and head off mate. , I be frank after having many heads off etc , i try to make life as easy as i can, yep been around it pretty long and get the syndrome called mechanics back. now i mentione this with me in mind , you are a fair bit younger than me thus what im going to say may not be applicable. I dont hesitate to pull the front off most of the FWD vws now , as most are modular anyway, worst case is you have to dump the AC but ive done plenty without having to. I oncde the fronts all off its a case of dragging the lot out so you can work on it more comfortably, like i say thats my opinion, back when i was a pup with VW i would do it all in place but what a royal pain in the ring man. Nice if you are thinkning of upping the rod strength, good idea, there is a few polos that are going to have rods going out to lunch out the side of the block. But that goes without saying plenty said about it on here. Im prepared for mines to do the same even with the AGU stregth, Sam like i said to you the other day mate , the longer it sits on that stand the closer it gets to the head coming off, Sooooo close mate
Yes your list is in very much simple form but its a good start
Cheers for now
