Would depend on the offset Al. But I do know that no one has managed to fit a 225/45R17 on a polo yet. I would suggest 215/40R17 as the biggest you can fit without fender work, but once again that would depend on the wheel offset

If you're lowered, 215 / 40's are all you want to play with without work. Even then, some plastic needs some rubbing to sit reasonably with stance at the rear.

Work to top-mounts can make a huge difference, but not a light undertaking.

And they would be a full 25mm less in diameter than 225/45r17 wouldn't they?

P.S. I'm running 225/45/16 (rims = 16 x 8 with 35mm offset) for the track which is a common semi size (but not in a road tyre) & is a lot smaller in height than the 215/45/17 & only 5mm higher than the 215/40/17.

That would depend on one's definition of biggest tyre, but as far as I can tell:

In terms of diameter, 235/80 R16 is the largest tyre that can be fitted on 6.5J x 16 wheels.

In terms of width, 255/70 R16 is the widest tyre that can be fitted on 6.5J x 16 wheels.
