Hey guys been doing a bit of searching on the net for performance upgrades for the 1.8T and it got me thinking what is the HP/KW limit at the engine for these engines??
From what i have seen there doesn't seem to be many over 250hp on a stock bottom end would this be about the reliable limit for the 1.8?
Will a K04 upgrade get you to those figures with all the other mods (cooler/intake/exhaust etc) or would it nessecitate in something like a Garrett GT28R?
Cheers Nick

I'm fairly sure Guy's TT has almost 400hp at the flywheel.
300hp/300lbs is the usual limit on standard rods. 6-700 with a big enough turbo and a well specified engine build.
The main reason for stopping at 250 is the sudden rise in cost when you have to replace the turbo with something bigger.

Nick, how do you intend to use your Polo GTI once you get it? Will it be just a street car, street car/occassional track use, occasional street/serious track use, 1/4 mile drag, race car ???
That's the best way of determining how to set it up - a serious increase in power needs to be balanced against the car's capacity to cope with it, ie handling, brakes, traction, clutch, diff etc etc.
Yeah i dont want stupid power out of it i was just curious as to the limits of the stock bottom end in the 20v 1.8T.
Mines going to mainly be a daily driver with the occasional track and 1/4 run, i do however want it in the 13's
Initially i'll probably be looking at coil overs (or a decent spring shock combo),18's and bigger brakes and maybe swaybars along with a chip/intake/filter then will throw a few more performance mods at it as money allows.

Reckon that if you did what Neil did (APR chip, exhaust, BMC CDA) you should be able to push the 13 second marker.
I'm not very certain but isnt there meant to be a separate APR tune for the KA04 turbo. However, I dont think it's necessary as you'll probably end up breaking bits and pieces if you're not careful.

The KO3S will deliver a reliable 145 kw atw, although traction will be a problem - an LSD will aid traction in corners, but not off the line. With more aggressive tuning and higher octane fuel, hitting 155-160 atw is possible. As you go bigger in turbos, power is then directed more toward the higher end, eg KO4 mid-range, Garrett GT28R high-end. This obviously results in more lag - something that may or may not suit you.
