I have to agree that a 40 profile looks good on your 215/40/17 wheelset. Nice wheels by the way .

I see you got the wheels fitted properly - did you need spacers in the end? If so, how thick are they?

No spacers. The pictures show a lot of room left over.

I went with 35 profile. There was around 20mm of space to the wheel well on 215/35/18 tyres (on the turned steering wheel, not full lock as that does not minimise the distance on the horizontal). The rim clearance to the suspension strut in the turned wheel was say 12mm (finger width)

To be honest, I should have gone with the 40 profile. Too late now. Going to have to live with my purchase for the next 40,000km until the tyres wear out.

I am not saying that an 18", ET45 will fit your car as it depends on the design of the wheel. I would be very confident that 215/40/18 will fit my car without rubbing.

an all round (daily driven + spiritedly driven on weekends) set of tyres might only last 25,000km's or so, if used in a particular way

but then, as you mentioned, i wouldnt be surprised if you've increased your rolling diameter significantly - rubbing might be an issue for you around corners.
