Thread: What do you love about your Polo?

  1. #71

    - Good fuel consumption.
    - Nicest to drive in it's price-range by a long shot.
    - I think they look fantastic.

I have an Evo IX as well, so I wasn't looking for a handler, but she doesn't disappoint. Quietly impressed. A different sort of handling to what is essentially a tarmac rally car. Very similar to our previous Cooper 'S', but a little faster out of the corner.

I love everything about my GTI from its looks to its handling, finish and quality of the interior and also the under dash shelf is very handy. I was considering buying an xr4 until a friend told me to look at a Polo after driving the Polo the xr4 didn't compare in ergonomics and finish.

That was my original post to this thread but how far from the truth did it turn out to be? lol!

I recently had the Revotechnik flash done to my car and I have to say it sure has made driving it more fun. Stock performance is ok but once you have the reflash done it seriously becomes a very very quick little car.

Before I bought the car and joined these forums I had no idea about APR, Revotechnik, and GIAC and the potential the reflash actually had on the GTI. I loved it to bits even more now! I knew I wouldn't be able to keep it stock somehow...lol

I love how 'complete' the car is. I was looking at an XR4 previous to the GTI, but it seemed so cheaply built. Admittedly, it is a cheap car. I could've had one for $21k. But dodgy seats, rubber gearboot, hard-to-read gauges etc...

I'm fairly certain i've made the right choice

    2010 Polo GTI

But should I wait for next model? Smitten by test drive of Polo GTI last weekend. Tried Polo TDI and low-end Golf, then Polo GTI, which just felt so much better. Seriously quick, composed, nice gearchange (I own a toyota), and feels solid (of course). Rarity also a drawcard. Bit concerned with stories about various things going wrong under warranty, and fuel consumption. Still was ready to put my money down. But then did some research and this car is fairly old (mk4 started in 2001). Apparently new Polo due in 2009 with GTI in 2010 (see link below) So do I wait?

"Starting from 2010 the competition of the fast small ones goes into a new round. Because then the new Polo comes as GTI - with 185 HP from a 1,4-Liter-TSI. The competition runs itself already times warmly"

Only you can answer this question. If you don't need a car right now and can hold off, then you have that option. Most people who are looking at getting a new car are generally doing so because they need one soon.

The thing you have to remember is that it's not always beneficial to buying the latest and greatest. You mentioned that the current Polo was designed in 2001, they've had all this time to fix issues and fine tune the car. The engine on a GTI (if I recall correctly) is 11 years old. That alone makes me happy as it's obviously a brilliant design.

Early adopters generally have it rough. Whether it's small annoying issues that will be fixed in a later release or a bigger issue with the engine/transmission. Just now I've read that some Polo's gearboxes are being fixed under warrenty due to a recall overseas. That's good news! If a similiar thing happens on a brand new model, it's going to take some time before they gather the data and discover all the problems before they can issue a fix.

I've been an early adopter on a couple of things (because I'm a bit of a gadget junkie) and it's always come back and bit me in the arse.

Let's not forget also that this is a car we're talking about, not some piece of tech.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it. I'd buy now and in 5 years or so if I /REALLY/ liked the new model, I'd buy. At least by then, they've had 3 years to work out the kinks.

Again, only you know what's best for you.

Welcome to the forum, Inky. Do you think you can wait that long?

Entirely your choice, of course, but think of the fun you could be having in the meantime ... and then you could trade up to the latest version.

    Cheers,
    Dave

don't be discouraged about the polo having a tried and tested engine. the best engines are the ones that don't go away. another example of this is the Mitsubishi 4G63 engine, which has been powering the Evo since the early '90s and was 1st introduced in the '87 Galant VR-4.

and i have a feeling that the new polo will be bigger and heavier, and i'm not too sure how tunable the TSI engines are?
