I got an early mark this arvo and went into Performance Wholesale at 6 Cronulla Court Slacks Creek Ph 3808 1986 to buy the Redline MTL 70W80 gearbox oil. $28.60 per quart cash sale.
I had all the tools I needed apart from that 17mm plug tool to remove the plugs. I made a Gearbox plug tool up from a bolt and two nuts and was all ready to go.
Dropped out the old oil. No issues except the plugs had never been out, so were tight as a fishes arse lol
An inspection of the old oil revealed the presence of syncro material and only fine particals, no crunks. Happy about that!
But it drained only 1.1 litres into the drain tray too. Not happy about that! 1 litre less than specified!
From the VW Service Manual for Checking the gearbox oil:
Very Important make sure you have replaced and screw in the lower plug torque to 35nm before filling with oil Lol
1.Fill the gearbox to the lower edge of the filler hole 2. Lightly screw in the upper plug and do not torque to 35nm yet! 3. Start engine, engage gear and allow gearbox to turn for approx two minutes. 4. Stop engine and remove the upper plug. 5. Top up the gearbox with oil to the lower edge of the filler hole and replace the upper plug and torque to 35nm. 6. Repace insulation undertray 7. Remove, lift the car from stands and lower the Polo on its wheels. 8. Test drive and experience shifting like never before, you can engage gears quickly, with the syncros working perfectly! 9: I think I recall someone saying the Redline will run in over a couple of hundred kilometers and just get better!
Cheers for the gears, Al
PS Thanks to Jimmy who first recommended Redline plus everyone who posted and offered sound advice.
I think this is going to be the next bit of maintenance I do - sounds awesome!
