The rubber gasket around the bottom of mine has cracked and come apart, and it worked out cheaper to go for a shark fin antenna than to replace the unit with a stock VW part.

I'll put up a fitment guide when I get it.
Let us know you go. I have a stubby antenna ready to go but can't for the life of me get the stock antenna off!

Yeah, I'm also unsure how to get the stock antenna off at this point, but was going to do some legwork to see if I can't find out.

Might be a matter of annoying VW service and asking them.

haha, yup mine unscrewed easily for the stubby one. If she's tight, grab some vice grips and maybe a rag to not damage the old one.

I'm not entirely sure one way or another yet as I haven't received the new antenna yet, and I haven't tried removing the old one.

Either way, shouldn't be too hard... surely....

I'm pretty sure removing the base of the antenna means removing the headliner to get to it. Can't just remove it from the outside of the car, plus the shark fin will involve some rewiring.

do you drop the roof lining to gain access to any bolts/screws under the antenna?

Hope this clears things a bit, however not sure what they mean bout the "D-Pillar".

    Removing
Before beginning dismantling work, perform the following
    steps:
    – Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers and
    remove ignition key.
    – Unclip cover strip from rear of moulded headlining.
    – Unclip left and right D-pillar trim.
    – Carefully lower moulded headlining slightly.
    – Open out foam covering on
    connectors -arrows- and disconnect
    inside connectors.
    – Remove securing nut

    Installing
Install in reverse order of removal.
    – Seat seal exactly in holes -arrows- of aerial base.
    – After installing the roof aerial, ensure that the aerial cables are routed correctly -1- through the hole in the securing nut -2-.
    – Apply contact grease to the inside of the roof in area of serrated washer.
