You drive to redline??!! . I don't think it's necessary to drive the Polo to redline, even if boost holds the whole way through. When giving it a good boot, i reckon about 5,500rpm is a good place to up-shift, you will still be on boost in the next gear. Generally though, I change at 3,500rpm.
I let my mates GF drive my car the other day (she has an 8V mk2 Golf GTI) and she changed from 1st to 2nd at about 7,000rpm...... I suppose in the mk2 she needs to rev the balls out of it. I've never revved it that high but it appears redline is at 6,500rpm. Is it not limited?? Does the chip allow a higher redline??

Revving to redline generally won't damage the motor as long as you don't bounce it off the limiter. The rev limiters as standard are set at a safe level so to not cause catastrophic damage if the limiter is reached.
Classic example in another brand car, the limiter in auto is set to 7k but in manual is set to 7.5k. On inspection and testing of both motors it was safely able to have the limiter changed to 9k (test car has been going for just over 2 years and has done approx 50k since work and limiter change were done).
If im giving it a bootful ill take it 6500rpm not past that.
