"The excess pressure from the turbocharger is then vented into the atmosphere or recirculated into the intake upstream of the compressor inlet"
I have heard that raised before but I can't quite work out how it could be an issue. The EGR return (to inlet) is located after the throttle body and there is still a partial vacuum to the engine there when the BOV opens on throttle closing. So I'm not sure how the exhaust gas could avoid being sucked in the to the engine whilst slipping past the closed/closing throttle.

What did I do to my polo today
Saw the passenger side mirror start to wobble
Oh I've see what you're doing there mr mirror
Pull over, rip mirror off. Will glue back on
Interestingly, this is a replacement mirror that I picked up secondhand. When I was installing it I deliberately left the heater wires unplugged. Still didn't save it. VW glue is ****.

I'm booked in for an APR tune at an open day over here in SA at German Auto. 10% off on the day, so $855. This is going to be a long 6 weeks.....
It used to be with APR that once you had paid for stage 1 with them, that later on when you sorted stg 2 hardware like dump pipe etc, that for another small fee they would remove the exhaust CEL. Maybe check that that system is still in place so you don't have to cough up all over again when you go stg 2.
