Just wait till he puts decent struts in, world of difference, no comparison. The lowered springs with standard struts don't actually improve grip, actually makes it more unsettled on anything other than smooth tarmac, but if he's happy and feels it's better, that's a win.

Then add front and rear swaybars.... , upgraded front control arm bushes and rear beam lock bushes....
The control arm and beam lock bushes made the biggest difference for me. More so than the shocks/springs
Then again, I actually bought the car with front and and rear sway bars already fitted, so can't comment on the difference they make. In my mind, POG's have brilliant balance and don't understeer....

what shocks would be better koni sports or bilstein B8's looking for smoothness

smoothness = koni track = bilstein
I'm very happy with the bilsteins. What springs did your mate/you put in? H&R have 2 kinds, the super lows and lows. I have the super lows, I think that's a 50-60mm lowering from standard, but don't quote me on that, and whilst the ride is very good, on bigger bumps, country B and C roads, at pace they can reach full travel. The H&R coilovers in the other car provide a better ride on the bigger bumps due to increased travel and control. But at highway pace and running through the suburbs (or race track), it's brilliant.
My red polo had Koni's in it years ago from the previous owner, and it handled and rode very well too.
For smoothness, don't run the super low spring and either the koni or bilstein will be sweet. The koni has adjustability and usually/used to be cheaper than bilstein. I'd imagine anyone would be chuffed with either.
