    What to buy polo gti or golf gti ??

    hi,

    ive just recently sold my s2000 and im looking at getting my first VW but am a bit unsure of what to buy, Ive been looking at either a MKV golf gti manual or a 9N polo gti.

    Ive driven a few golfs and im happy with the way they handle and preform. also the fact that there is a massive aftermarket performance parts available make it a more appealing to me.

    for the polo i like the fact its a bit smaller and zippy but unsure about its reliability when compared to the golf and also the performance aint that crash hot either. and also struggle to find may sites that offer performance parts.

    Im looking at purchasing one in the new year just wanted some input. is it possible to improve the overall performance of a polo or just stick to the golf and do the usual bushes, sway bars etc...

    I have had my Polo GTI from new, it's 4 years old, and 104k km on it. It has been tuned, modded, dropped, and upgraded, but th only reason it has been in for warranty work is when the A/C gas decided to go on a holiday the week that I bought it.

    I haven't had any of the gearbox issues that have come up, nor have I had any problems at all looking for performance part, be it availability, or where to get them at a great price. Most of the parts for the Polo come out of Europe, but you will find that some MK4 Golf GTI and 8L Audi S3 parts will fit the Polo GTI.

    Look at websites like awesomegti.co.uk, DPM performance, Forge Motorsport, Orange Tuneing, and the like. All these sites will send to Australia, but you will have to email them or call them to organise shipping. Plus you have the local tuners like APR, GIAC, CustomCode, and many more... There is no shortage of parts out there for the Polo GTI...

    You will find that using the search bar on here will help you out a lot.

    hey tanner, how's things?

    the golf gti is undoubtedly a great car, but one mistake that people make when comparing a polo gti 9n3 to it is precisely what you said - "unsure about reliability/ moddability".

    modded, these engines are capable of 700+ horsepower.

    the engine in a 9n3 polo gti is one of the most reliable and bomb proof around - it's the same 1.8T that's been in the audi group for yonks and yonks and yonks, so not only does it have considerable mod options, it's also strong as f7ck.

    it's quite easy to get the polo to go fast, and the engine would likely be much more reliable than a mk5/mk6 golf, so dont let that hold you back...

    I've owned both cars, and would highly recommend the Polo.

    The golf has some little perks that I miss, but if I were you and had 25K to buy a car, I would buy a polo for <15K, and spend some of the rest modifying it.

    The golf is a bigger car, and always felt far more planted and controlled than the polo. My polo, with a tune and suspension, is such a fun car to drive, the Golf was excellent, but the chipped polo feels far more alive and manic than my golf ever did.

    Obviously I'm comparing a tuned car to a non-tuned, but I reckon you should save yourself some money, and you'll have an ownership experience that is just as rewarding.

    It depends on what you want to use it for. The golf is a more modern, better equipped and faster car, but you can probably have just as much fun in a mildly modded polo.

    Edit: forgot to mention you can't possibly destroy the DSG in a 9N polo cos they didn't have them

    Depends on the scenario your in and if you need a bigger car

    Polo GTI is awesome value and heaps of fun to drive, uses less fuel and chipped goes just about as hard as a Golf GTI, tonnes of mods available which are relatively cheap, blows away V8's and suprises people, + nowhere near as common as the Golf

    Golf GTI - awesome car more suited to a family, if you need 4 doors ect.. is the refined Polo but more sanitised performance than the Polo (little less fun), heaps of mods available to.

    Really, it all comes down to how much room do you need in the car?

    If the polo has enough room for you then it can potentially be a quicker and better handling car. It's smaller, lighter, more nimble and every bit as reliable as a Golf. There are plenty aftermarket parts for both and they both have a pretty active modding community.

    There's nothing wrong with the reliability of the Polo, nothing at all.

    guy in a fpv v8 ute tried pushing me at the start of reefton spur... took me 3 turns to lose him completely, and mine's a DIESEL (and diesels are slow, especially for those who've never driven one). now, let's play ''choose your own adventure":

    Mate, you're a CRAZY driver. That last polo cruise proved it to me.

    I can attest to a chipped polo's abilities though - the other night saw me pull away from an BA xr8 on prinny (wasn't a domination by any stretch but up until a satisfyingly illegal speed (where I eased up) he certainly wasn't gaining).
