What do VW dealer think about BYO oil (as long as it's the correct viscosity)?

Mazda used dino oil so I used to bring Mobil 1 or Motul Turbo Light and gear oil and they were more than happy to use that instead of their standard Castrol on my old MX, are VW dealers likely to get anal about it (or at the prospect of making less money on servicing)?

    Hey gentleman,
Took mine in to Essendon Volkswagon for 15000kms service yesterday cost $330 for Oil change, Oil filter and safety checks everything pretty much. They used Castrol Edge and I must say I can notice the difference, big difference to Fuchs. Don’t get me wrong, Fuchs is good, very good oil.... But Castrol edge is better, much better anyway, I payed the money got the stamp, my dad (who is a mechanic) changed the sparkplugs and air filter I only payed for the parts. $330 for an oil change is a rip off as it cost me $100 for the oil when I saw it at super cheap for almost half that price...bloody pricks lol

Anyways the point im trying to make is... Castrol edge is worth the edge haha give it a go boys, you wont be disapointed!

Which Edge? 0w40 or 5w30? (or one of the other 2 versions)

0W-40 is the one you want.

Don't know if edge last for 15kms service though.... I only goes for SLX Pro cos it is long life oil. Its still standard atm so i don't bother to change it every 5kms.

Do they still have Castrol SLX Professional? I checked Castrol website and couldnt find it, I thought maybe they stopped producing the SLX and replaced it with Edge Sport which has the same 5-30 viscosity as the SLX.

Anybody know if I can still get Castrol Professional SLX?

Yup! I am definitely going to get my dad to change the oil and oil filter every 5,000 kms...No harm done. The GTI is a hard working engine so it really needs to be taken good care of... I only take it to VW for the stamp...

5w-30 is what is recommended by Castrol and is also the viscosity of the SLX Professional.

According to the handbook, for long service life you need an oil which conforms to the VW 504 00 or VW 503 00 standards (of which Edge 5w-30 doesn't meet, but SLX Pro does meet 504 00 as it's engineered for VW).
