I wouldn't use a high pressure anything under the bonnet, ever.
Degreaser and a watering can is as far as I'd go. You could get water in plugs and cause yourself
Gavin all kinds of bother.
All inspired by my recent cleaning efforts - wanting to cut loose on the donk and surrounds with engine degreaser and high pressure hose a la Car Lovers.
Anyone know if thre is anything that should be protected/covered by plastic bag under there prior to blasting away?

Well High pressure under the bonnet is a touchy subject. The little $200 karcher at 1 meter distance can't really do any damage. Proper HP gear at 2 meters will do serious damage. The HP gear that gets used where I work takes arms off at that range.
And high pressure cleaners can tear cables out of sensors(I have done that n, and can cut seals and generally get water where its not meant to be.
somewhere in the polo manual under cleaning it says that there is some kind off spray they have put under the bonnet kind off protection and if you clean it you should get it re sprayed, something like that i will go check it out later. Maybe some one knows more?
