turbo timer - is it recommended?

    Hey all,
i was just thinking about a turbo timer the other day. i am a spirited driver and the beloved Polo has been chipped. do you think a turbo timer would be a smart choice to prolong the life of the turbo/engine?

    Thanks all,

    Rhys

    Why not?

I would use one if they weren't illegal and didn't void your insurance.

Just take it easy for the last few minutes of your trip and/or let the car idle for a couple of minutes before you turn it off.

I'll always let it sit in the garage and cool down if i've been giving it some on the way home, or even if i'm just parking it somewhere. Park car, get my **** together/wallet/phone/bag etc while its idling then kill it and lock it. Or play with my dog for 5minutes while it cools down in my garage.

Are turbos are watercooled and oilcooled.

Ford boast that you can turn off an xr6t when the turbo is glowing red and youve just been thrashing it due to the same system.

Doesn't the polo have its own inbuilt turbo cooling system after you switch the engine off? You can hear the pump running, i believe this circulates coolant for about 10min or so. Someone correct me if i am mistaken.

Plus, think it might interfere with our immobiliser system...

I'd save the hassle, warm down your engine by driving lightly for about 5minz after a 'spirited run.'

Dont waste your time.. you will (sorry to be blunt) but you will look like a wanker

The turbos in these cars are tiny for starters so they super heat and super cool quickly!!!

We all drive spiritedly.. we wouldnt be here other wise.. so just take it easy for 5 minutes before you get to said destination and you can turn her right off..

plus its better to have cold air coming on to your Radiator that is cooling the Turbo instead of allowing a fan to pull the air thru the radiator!!! Especially in a hot country like Oz.

    My Two Cents

Save your Money and buy something nifty like a turbo or a Strut brace or something..

chances are you might be able to fit the MK1 Audi S3 Strut Brace as the mk5 polo shares the mkIV golf Chassis..

Coolant only - It's the oil that cakes inside the turbo that you have to worry about. But it does help a little.

These things get up to 900+ degrees and spin at 100,000rpm+ It is very easy for the oil near the turbo to cake up as soon as you turn the car off, this not only destroys the oil/creates sludge in the engine but can cause the shaft of the turbo to be damaged on startup.

The idea is for the oil to the circulating around the engine while the turbo cools down so the heat is spread evenly through the oil rather than in that one spot.

My 2c - But really do whatever you like. Turbo timers aren't just for wankers.
