    Trans Oil Replacement? Easy?

    Hi there,

I am a relatively new owner of a 2006 Polo GTI. It has about 70K on the clock, and the transmission seems a bit notchy. Nothing serious, but I thought that it might be time to get some new oil in there.

    Two questions:

    1) Which oil? I have heard of Redline, but I am hesitant to put an oil other than VW stock. I remember from my Honda days that Redline is good at first but isn't good for box in the long run.

    2) How easy is it? I am pretty experienced under the hood, but not with this car. I've rebuild motors, heads, etc in the past but nothing as late model. Should I just give it a go?

    3) Online sources for a manual? To go with the above question, is there a good source for an online mechanics manual for the Polo?

    Thanks!

    -Simon

    Manual transmission I assume?

There is a revised oil for them that VW came out with, that was meant to solve the notchiness. If the car is still under warranty, drop into your local dealer, and query them about it. While it's straight-forward to replace, it's better when it's free, right?

Hi Simon and welcome to the Watercooled family

You may want to invest in a dog bone mount and some Redline MTL gearbox oil. I can't speak highly enough about this combination. Absolutely no notchiness and gear changes are like a hot knife through butter.

i recently had my transmission oil replaced with a newer blend from VW. it was covered by the warranty, so your dealer shouldn't have a problem replacing it. i have noticed only a slight improvement with the shifts and notchiness.

Thanks for the quick replies guy. Unfortunately, mine is just out of warranty, so no go on that. Was it a recall issue or just under warranty?

Can I put in the Redline myself? I've been looking online for a protocol but have not found one yet. I have all the tools and garage...

The dogbone mount is the APR item correct? I am assuming that I will need to go up to European Autotech to get it installed?

not sure about your other questions, but my change was just because i wanted it. it was not a recall issue.

Sounds like Redline is the way to go. MT 90 I assume. Does anyone know the volume required? My book has every motor except the GTI!
