    RPM on the highway

    Hi all,

Matt here, potential new owner I was just wondering at what rpm the 9N3 sits in 5th@100km? This is one of my few gripes with the car as I come from a history of 6 speeds. Also how is the cabin noise/vibration on the highway?

    Cheers folks

Which version? Match, Club, Pacific, Edition, Pacific TDI or GTi.

GTI has very good economy at 80k, pretty good at 100, not so good at 120.

Still, 7L per 100k at freeway speeds is not bad.

I love my GTI at high way speeds, even with the exhaust it's the quietest car I've owned
I don't know whether it's the tune making it run more efficient but my MFD sits on the 6L/100 all day on the highway, occasionally dips into the 5.9 on the highway.

Even if you were to change in a 6 speed it'll still sit on the same rpm for a given speed, it's the diff ratios that matter

    I agree with Sam.

The Polo drives like a much bigger car on the highway. Smooth and quiet with surplus power if you need it ...

My best was 5.6l/100km on a return trip to the Sunshine Coast from Brisbane ..... thats diesel territory ..... except its got petrol POWER!

Constantly averaging in the low 6sl/100km on the open road ....

Oops, GTI. Not worried about fuel tbh as I'm currently on 13K per 100km haha. More concerned about vibration, noise, exhaust drone etc.

No drone, vibration or noise that is excessive ..... did I mention for overtaking, a tuned GTI can do 80-120km/h in 3s as a bonus? Leaves V8s in the dust

It's really quite a good highway car doing a few hundred kms sitting in comfort. Unless bits have been poorly modified, there's no reason for drone or vibrations. Much more comfortable than the girlfriends new ford fiesta, there is a bit more road and wind noise in the polo than the fiesta (not that we're comparing), though we're both happy to sacrifice that on a long drive for the better comfort of the polo.

13L/100km my bad, it's funny you mention the 80-120 thing. I was considering a mazda 3 mps for while and that stat was one of the things that caught my eye about them - 3.4 seconds IIRC! Good to hear about worked polo gtis being able to do the same a bit more of an important stat than top speed or 0-100 in my opinion.

Overtaking is not an issue staying in 5th (in a chipped GTI), for quick action, drop it into 3rd and scoot past.
