    Tassie Drive Holliday

Hey, I just wanted to ask if anyone has done a drive holiday around Tasmania
I'm deadset keen to try and get down there, and check out some of those very nice looking mountain roads. Mind you, a round trip from Darwin(where I live) to Sydney(where family is) and back is around 8000km, then have the drive down to Melbourne and then to Tassie...Should be a cool road trip...

Yeah I did a 5 day trip around Tassie last year (in an auto Corolla........).

Fantastic place. Real sense of community in the place and the locals are fantastic and clearly know they live somewhere special.

Coming from S.E Qld the thing you really notice is the complete lack of traffic once outside built up areas (even built up areas is very bearable). We obviously weren't flying around the place, but I can honestly say that in 5 days we got caught behind a car and had to overtake 3 or 4 times.

You have to watch out for the wildlife - Echidnas in some areas are rife and at night the possums (which are enormous) and the devils come out.

Despite what you may think it is not all rainforest - a lot of Tassie is very bushy and scrubby but it can vary from one corner to another.

But VERY mountainous. Everywhere you are you are either driving in mountains/hilly areas or the horizon is filled with them.

Hobart and Launceston are beautiful - they have kept so many of the original buildings (particularly Hobart).

Definately get over to Strahan on the west coast.

Cheers for that...I grew up in the Blue Mountains and have lived close to the Snowy Mountains() for 4 years before I moved to Darwin(), so I love mountain roads, and have always wanted to visit Tassie. The drive down to Sydney from Darwin doesn't bother me, as I have done it a few times now(Tip...Don't drive at night, and don't drive through QLD, the roads are absolutely S**T!! past Mt Isa).

great place to go driving... have been twice in the last few years. once in my forester for a week.. drove from the boat to strahan - stayed for 3 nights... beautiful place.. roads are windy through the mountains etc.. similar i guess to great ocean road in places but on the side of mountains. then drove to hobart for the rest of our stay.. did all the touristy type tours and things as we had not been over for so long..
then we did the bug in last year in our cabrio with the extended tour up the east coast.. fantastic little towns along the way.. great sight seeing etc.. great looking coastline and beaches.

will see if i can dig up some of the photos we took.

oh the worst part of our first trip in the forester was leaving strahan about 7am... heading accross towards queenstown you go up accross a mountain.. there was so much fog around we couldn't see more than a few meters in front of us.. we were in first gear navigating our way around this mountain on a road similar to the great ocean road in vic.

i did a 2 week tour around tassie this time last year in my golf VR6. So many approached me to talk about my car. I even got a vwwatercooled leaflet put on my windscreen
Was an awesome time. Although a lot of the roads are very tight! I didnt really have much trouble with wildlife. Its not like northern vic and nsw where u really need to look out for the big roos.
I wouldnt say the roads are the best ive ever driven on but they are good and relatively traffic/police free. The good part is you can tour around the state and there is something to see in each section. strahan would have had to been my favourite spot. Was quite pretty there.
