Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but maybe it will help someone else. My car has had an annoying knocking at the front, drivers side, since I bought it a couple of months ago. Half expected a suspension bush to be picked up and Warrant of Fitness time, but it passed with no drama. After reading this post (thanks Blitzen), I decided to remove my right hand drop link and go for a little (low speed) spin. Bugger me, the noise is gone Drop link back in and will order new ones on Monday which should put a stop to it. While on the car, I had given the link and ARB a good tug but couldn't discern any play.

So there you go, cost free test to try isolate that annoying noise... Do this at your own risk and don't blame me if you flip your car over on its lid!
