    Sunroof Delete on Polo GTI

Has anyone ever looked into removing the sunroof on a 9N3 Polo (glass, motors and associated components) and replacing it with something lighter?

I've decided that my Polo is now too annoying for use as a daily driver, so I've put a deposit down on a new car for around-town and made the decision to keep the Polo as a track-only vehicle.

As part of that new purpose I'd like to get rid of the sunroof and replace it with a lighter piece fixed into place.

Has anyone done this before, or have any thoughts on how to go about the replacement? I'm assuming the glass isn't structurally important (not that it will be completely relevant once a cage is added) so I was thinking of just having a perspex sheet cut to size and siliconing it in place. Alternatively I could use the existing glass as a mould and build a fibreglass or CF panel to drop in as I don't really care whether light comes through or not.

Any thoughts as to what might be the better option?

I've done a bit of searching around the net and it doesn't seem like anyone makes an off-the-shelf replacement panel for the roof glass so I'm guessing it's DIY time.

Most track cars I've seen with a deleted sunroof have a sheet of ally in place. I suggest you check the CAMS guidelines.

    Exactly!

James (guessing that's your name) if you don't already know, my car's a written off, Hail damaged car, the ironic thing being that when the cars in the sun, you can't see any of the 5c size dents, it's only at certain angles in the shade. It was sold to me this way without the seller disclosing it, took him to court because he'd sold the car to me at almost double what he'd bought it for at the auctions, but lost the case. So I'm now stuck with it - doesn't bother me, because I love it to pieces, but eventually I'll have to sell it at a huge loss because of it's status.

    NP (or James too haha).

Interesting thoughts guys - though nightphotographer if the idea is to end up with a body in saleable condition my polo isn't going to be much help.

Part of the reason I'm keeping it is the cost of returning it to sellable state - especially the dents in the bonnet from an encounter with a roo and the creased roof where I argued with my garage door one morning and lost...

Thanks for the offer, but aside from being a costly swap I don't think you'd end up with a shell much nicer than the one you have now.

I think CVWC still have a Polo GTI being parted out - might talk to them about the roof options.

Aww that's a shame, it was a nice thought though, kept me thinking positively for the day haha. It's not so much the condition, it's the silly 'repairable write-off' status that's going to live with the car until the day it dies. My car is in great condition from afar, it's when you get the magnifying glass out and see the multiple tiny dents coating the roof.

Maybe I'll buy a new car and keep mine as a track beast too! haha
