Stupid me... rushing through gears too quickly!

    Hi guys,

Just had an awesome track day... fantastic weather... shown my friends what Polo GTI can do... (friends brought 350Z / 200SXs / MR2 Turbo / M3 / etc...)

They were very surprised by the Polo GTIs pace, over took MR2 turbo / M3 at some point, keep up with 200SXs tuned...

Anyway, I was driving back home, obviously quite tired (it was about 350km journey back), I shifted to 3rd but took the clutch out too quickly, and crunched the gears... obviously not too nice noise... and kinda felt the gear stick 'ping' me out to neutral again. (i was accelerating at moderate pace from stand still)

Obviously, clutch in again, put it in 3rd goes in at once, no noise no problems since. Just worried, what sort of damage I would have done...

I just changed my gearbox oil 1000km ago, should I bother changing it again, should I worry about it at all?

It's been fine since... (that's about 250km ago).... no noise.

    someone gimme good news!

Wouldn't lose too much sleep over it.Unlikely to have suffered any major damage with one missed shift.
It's constant abuse[flat shifts etc]that generally does the damage.
    Cheers

Hahaha nothing to worry about mate! You have to give the old GB a heap more of a caning to damage the gears/synchros than that. You'll be fine.

I would have to agree with everyone else here. I doubt you have done any damage to your box they are not as weak as you may think.

Me and some mates of mine once had a s**t box ute that was destined for Sims metal. We used to crunch the gears deliberately and constantly and the gearbox still held together. You dont realise how much punishment something can take until you really give it some.

    I feel relieved!!

    Thanks guys!

Funny thing is 3rd gear, same thing happened last time I was coming from the same track day, on the same stretch of the road during that 350km journey back.

Either my leg is lazy from long drive.... or that road is cursing my third gear!!

Anyway, I feel much better now! *whew*

2nd-3rd is a common "issue," shift in many cars. You should try it in a 6-spd manual VZ HSV with the M12 Tremec T56. My God, the 2nd to 3rd feels like you're trying to move the shifter through solid concrete... haha.

similarly with the old 020 boxes - its 1st to 2nd that gives trouble. nothign to worry about.
