Yup I've had a gearbox rebuild. VW Camberwell. Very good service, very willing to help out, and they lent me a nice hire car. Highly recommended.

I had my gearbox rebuilt for the '2nd gear crunchy synchro" problem at Camberwell.
And had it rebuilt again at Geelong for the "stuck in 5th gear, then bolt through backing plate and oil spewing everywhere because it 'possibly' wasn't put back together properly the first time" problem.

Have you guys tried Redline Mtl???? does reduce the crunch considerably. Tore down a few now, is pretty much an 02A and 02J. Only real difference is the casing and mounting position. Belllhousing is still and 02J, hence the guys using MK4 Gti clutches and slave.
Redline has cured HEAPS of crunchy boxes and was curing them back in the early 90s including Cupras with 02As ( similar internals)

With all the problems I keep hearing about gear boxes, I'm thinking of getting some as a precaution.

Easy to get? How much is it going to set me back?

Is it as easy as emptying the reservoir of the old and topping up the new or do you need to bleed out the remnants of the old fluid and break it in slowly (sorry for the newbie questions).

No res to empty there mate. There is 2 17mm internal hex plugs, one at the diff area( drain) and one at the front of the gearbox casing(fill) go for a drive and get the box nice and hot then drain, drip it dry mate. You will need approx 2litres of MTl for the fill.

Jim's right. Redline MTL cured my gearbox problem. Here's the recommendation I put on the recommended suppliers part of the forum a while back:

    Redline and Royal Purple lubricants

For Redline and Royal Purple lubricants at what must be the best prices in Oz, delivered to your door with amazing speed at very reasonable cost, I highly recommend PerformanceLub in Melbourne. Check www.performancelub.com/ for prices, payment details, etc. This site also has links to the lube manufacturers web sites for detailed technical information, which is very helpful.

Also a tip re Redline. My box took 2.1 litres, and as it comes in 946ml (1 US quart) bottles, you'll need to buy 3 bottles for a complete fill - DO NOT be tempted to underfill.
