Should I buy a POLO or GOLF?

I'm in the market for a car for the missus. She has been driving a MK5 GTI for the last year and we're downsizing. We have sold the GTI and after putting some money off the home loan have up to around $17,000 to spend.

I'm not sure whether to get her an 05 Comfortline (which will probably have close to 100,000km on the clock) or to aim more for an 06 Polo which will have more like 40,000km on the dial. She doesn't really mind as long as she gets a VW. But do you think it's worth paying a few G's extra for the GOLF?

She is doing 90% inner city driving with the occasional trip up the coast.

Golf would be more roomy, and the 2.0 FSI would have lots more grunt than a 1.4 or 1.6 polo. Probably would ride and handle better too.. I'd go the golf.

For me it was a question of room. I didn't need it or the extra doors, so it would've been a waste to go for a Golf. Not to mention, with the money left over I could finally afford those Canon L series lenses I've been after. Money much better spent.

If there is that much inner city driving and she doesn't need the extra room, I say Polo.

Yeah it's all about the space if you're not going for the performance models. I still can't get over the size of the boots in the Polo. So tiny. Front interior space is alright in the Polo but rear wise the Golf is much better. They're both surprisingly spacious though but yeah, space is key.
If space isn't an issue and for that kind of money I'd prefer the lower kms on the Polo probably.
    Cheers,

I can't really understand the need for lots of space around you when driving a car. What does it achieve?

The Hyundai Getz I have as a hire car at the moment while my clutch gets fixed has all the room you need and more.

I like a car I can basically wear.

I'm 6'3" with a passenger on weekends and no-one in the back. I can't really understand why you would possibly need more space than what the Polo has? I HATE big(ger) cars - it feels like driving around in a house from your lounge room.

Really, who needs a boot? Put stuff on the back seat. I'd prefer no boot and a weight saving.

But then again I find a Lotus Elise just about right so maybe I'm a bit unusual.

^ Your Mum didn't hug you enough.

    Golf is the correct answer.

depends- if its only going to be one person in the car more than 50% of the time, get a polo. they are DEAD EASY to manouvre in inner city traffic (i always manage to claim gaps when merging into other lanes at the lights, where others simply cant) and they are plenty roomy.

if you plan on frequently having 3+ people in the car, plus junk, then golf.

    good luck!!!
