    Haha, you trying to scare me off already?! I've been watching a few videos, seems like a hard place to read - I will definitely want to get down there for a couple of runs on the Saturday.

    My truck carked it last night (some ignition issue) and had to get towed home, I'm in Sydney for work today and tonight so haven't had a chance to look at it, hopefully it's something simple to sort out this weekend or I might end up having to drive the car down, at which point I'll have to make some decisions about wheels and tyres. It's possible Jenna won't be able to come, in which case I might possibly be able to fit them in the car...? Dunno.

    Hmmm, interesting thoughts about the weather, just had a look and google says showers Sat from about 2pm onward... Not showing Sunday yet.

    Ha ha not trying to scare you. No its just worth a look at how mentally fast it is. I've never been much bothered by the esses but the bit where you go through that first kink leading into the esses is narrow. You need to start turning the car before you can even see the fork in the road and you are hammering at that point. Its literally a car width of tarmac with a foot either side too. I've gotten through there flat before but had less power then so this time will be different. Yeah wet is dicey there so I hope its dry. Major rush.
    Just got my 215 fronts put on today - one brand new and oven baked, the other not so much so the new one is a front left so that it sticks through that kink. I'll have to give them a bit of a skim on the road before they are good to go just to get a bit of a scrub on them in case it is damp.
    That sux re the truck. Pete will probably come and may bring a trailer but that doesn't help you re tyre selection does it. Hopefully the AR1's will fit - I want us competing on equal terms!

    ha ha but you have the cubes! Unless its wet Huntley isn't usually like the other rounds where a big range of car types can all be within 5/10ths. Probably 85% of it is full throttle, one braking zone and only 2 proper corners so generally big horsepower and big testicles win. Liam should win it really unless having a baby has messed with his head. Me i'll just be happy if I can get near Matt Cameron's (Skoda vRS guy in this site not the Soundgarden drummer) record- a high 27 I think.

    Oil cooler follow up.......

    So noticing a couple more things with the cooler. Been working a couple of night shifts that put me on empty roads at 4am , 10 degrees ambient but where the the car is cruising along. The problem hasn't so much been the oil temps. They are a bit slower coming up provided the cooler is blanked off- forget about it if the blanking is removed though- very slow to come up then.
    The water though when it doesn't have the heat of the oil helping it stay in place, is all over the shop. On the thermostat it'll be anywhere between 72 - 88 in those conditions and struggling to even hold 90. But the other night I had the heater on as soon as it would blow hot air and the car was running around on 68 degrees. Once I thought ok heater off now I'll get the temps back up, they barely wanted to come up. And the water takes much longer to warm up when you are straight into cruising drives. I think it was Gav a while back who mentioned that once he put an oil cooler on another dub in the U.K, that he had to go to a warmer thermostat. I can now see why. My car has the oe rated 90 degree stat. There are a few guys getting around on here that have cooler eg 72 degree stats and to them I would say don't do this mod without going back to a standard stat because you will rarely be at water temp and around town the ecu will probably in cold fuelling. Anywhere that it is a bit cooler in winter I'd be using the stock stat and installing the oil cooler where it can have airflow to it blanked off.
    So what's it all mean. I think for urban driving, that Vw thought very hard about rating the cooling system. Loose the heat exchanger and the car seems to be well over radiatored on a cruise.
    Im going to look into what type of spigot I need so that I can run the oil thermostat sandwich plate under the heat exchanger. I'm pretty sure shorter oil filters are available so I can run it all in a stack as I don't really want to go to a remote filter. That to me will give the best balance for urban, not racing completely under temp in hillclimbs/ rallysprints and I think with the right ducting it'll still trim what I need off the oil temps for track work. My two cents worth anyway.

    edit: even coming into work this afternoon in 23.5 degrees ambient and the car stable at 94, putting the heater on full heat blowing on '3' saw the water temps drop within a minute to 88-89.
    Flip side is that on the circuit surely the water temps will be closer to the 90's and if they start to climb I can put on my auxillary radiator......the heater!

    Fair enough. Yeh I was discussing it with Dad on the weekend, he said he ran there years ago for an MG event - he said he was basically full throttle the whole way up the hill, 1st, 2nd,change into 3rd and the car wouldn't accelerate in 3rd, just hold that speed up the rest of the hill. He said many of the other MGs were getting into 3rd and slowing down, having to change back into 2nd! Needless to say, he thought it would be a lot more fun in the Vette.

    Yep its super steep. I double drove Peters clio there after Polo 1.0 was written off and I couldn't believe how different it is in an NA versus a turbo. If you didn't time the gear changes perfectly you may as well roll through the rest of the run because you weren't going to get a quick time. The car would bog and drop off the cam so easily with so much less torque. With a turbo, no such problems - even once I'm in third when I had the open diff I had to feel for the front wanting to spin up. Its a hard place in a front wheel drive being so steep and the weight wanting to come off the fronts as you accelerate up the hill. I think for RWD your thing to be mindful of is zero front tyre temp as you turn into the first right hander after the kink where you could understeer like the guy in that vid. If you cant bring the truck or fit the semis in the car, at least throw in the front AR1's. You can heat the rears off the line but having the semis on the front for some front end insurance wouldn't be a bad idea - definitely something to test with on the practice Saturday if you do it. For me its losing the tail there cos my rears are stone cold which is why I'll be running rear softs. First time i'll run medium fronts/soft rears and no way to test it either so the first run should be interesting!
    One things for sure, being a 25-28 sec run the start is super important. As a proportion of your run the start is huge and probably where you'll get the jump on me. The start area is flat (not like conrod) but feeds straight up the hill after that.
