Rust & some other questions, To GTI owners

Hi guys,

just want to know with all gti owners, does your center wheel (the middle ring inside the rotor , shown on the picture) rusted??? I've also have couple of the screws near the Steering Rod, just behind the caliper (i think that's what its called) , some of the screws are rusted too

Now, my car is only 6 months new. It was made last 2008 in April. My question now, does this get cover by the warranty?

Another thing, there seemed to be some kind of oil leak under the body too. (is this normal), CV JOINT are oily on the outside

Yes they do rust there because of the type of metal used and its not painted or coated in any way to prevent rust. Your brake discs' also rust too, throw some water on them come back the next day and the discs' will show some surface rust.

There is nothing to worry about. Having said that I did have some problems taking the rear wheels off because the rust kinda seized to the centre bore of the wheel. I put a very thin layer of grease there to prevent it from sticking in the future. If you do the same make sure its a tiny amount of grease otherwise when your brakes heat up the grease may run onto the disc.

I had that happen to an Alfa I used to own, however, the mallet didn't work (and I was hitting it HARD!). Eventually, I put the wheel studs back on but kept them slightly loose, went for a 200m drive, came back and the wheel came off easy!

What, and the Alfa didn't catch fire on that drive?


Back on topic, I think the thin layer of grease will work well, or maybe if you are really worried about it look into some black paint like VHT Brake, Caliper, Drum and Rotor Paint (in satin black or gloss black).

An oil leak is definitely not normal. Mine was leaking oil and the only place I could really see it was the bottom of the gearbox. There was a bit on the CV joint but that was probably because it blew there. Turned out to be a turbo oil feed pipe. Get it checked out...should be warranty job.

yup. I went back to the dealer, and booked for next week. They must hated me by now (been back to the dealer more than 5 times now, all warranty)

they shouldnt hate you, isnt it vw that pays for parts and leibour for waranty?

Rusting like that's pretty normal. Haha if you're worried about rust, don't buy a Falcon - the family XR6T's engine block, front suspension arms, hub carrier, basically anything that's cast iron and unpainted are covered in surface rust.

Seriously though, they're unsightly but nothing to worry about.
